Construction began in 1968, but was incomplete when the inaugural tournament was held in 1969. It officially became part of our Harbour Town skyline in 1970, more than five decades ago.
The interior was transformed into a museum-like experience that shares the history of Hilton Head Island as visitors make their way to the top.
It takes 114 steps to reach the top of the Harbour Town Lighthouse, where visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Harbour Town, Calibogue Sound and the surrounding Lowcountry.
Sea Pines founder Charles Fraser envisioned the lighthouse as a symbolic beacon that would attract people to a lively community gathering place.
After seeing the lighthouse’s red interior steel girders, Fraser’s brother suggested using that same color on the exterior. Plus, they wanted the lighthouse to feel “fun and memorable.”
The lighthouse stands behind the 18th green at Harbour Town Golf Links, overlooking the course’s famous finishing hole along Calibogue Sound.
