French peasants in Gascony used duck fat for everything — confit, potatoes, vegetables, eggs. Appalachian grandmothers did the same thing with lard and bacon grease.

Truth is… they were both onto something. 🦆

Your great-grandmother had one of these on the back porch. Her mother did too. Before running water, before indoor plumbing, the aluminum wash pan was how America got clean — dishes, laundry, kids, and all. We still carry them at Red Hill General Store in Hillsville, just like we always have. Some things don't need to be improved.

Here’s the thing about summer around here…

You can either fight the bugs all season… or get smarter than them.

We’ve been talking a lot lately about some of our favorite bug solutions at the store because honestly, they’re just plain interesting.

There’s Zevo On-Body, which uses IR3535® — an ingredient inspired by a naturally occurring amino acid. No DEET, no harsh chemical smell, no greasy feeling. Just solid protection against mosquitoes and ticks for up to 8 hours. A lot of folks like it because it’s designed to target bugs, not everything else around you.

Then there’s Tick Tape, which might be one of the simplest ideas we’ve ever seen. It’s double-sided sticky tape you wrap around the tops of your boots or socks before heading into the woods or tall grass. Ticks, chiggers, and fleas can’t crawl past it — they just get stuck. No poison. No chemicals. Just tape doing its job.

And of course, good old Neem Oil — used for thousands of years as a natural insect repellent and still going strong with folks looking for a more natural option outdoors.

Funny how some of the best ideas are either incredibly old… or incredibly simple.
