One of my favorite things about this area is the tradition, etiquette, and attention to detail of fox hunting.

As someone who lives 75% of her life with so much dirt under her fingernails and on her face that her husband can’t even find a clean spot to kiss her when he gets home from work, I adore getting my horse and tack prepped, spotlessly clean, and ready for a morning “hunting.” It’s a beautiful way to enjoy our countryside, seeing animals work and play, and, sometimes, people.

If you’re not familiar with the sport (this is a flower account after all), it originated in true hunting, but please know that foxes, hounds, and horses these days all take it as sport and the foxes are not harmed these days. If you know animals and know foxes, you know that they make a game of it themselves!

Speaking of neighbors…. I’m so sorry to hear this.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Jett.

Good morning Loudoun. If there was a man who passed through this life not making a lot of noise, yet making an enormous positive impact Louis Jett was that man.

Mr. Jett was a local historians detailing the rich history of Loudoun and surrounding counties. He often focused on the untold or conveniently altered history of African American communities. Mr. Jett kept impeccable records. He also gifted to families and individuals huge binders that he created detailing a person's own life story. To receive a binder from Mr. Jett, was indeed a precious gift.

Louis Jett's life should be remembered and celebrated. As we carry his torch forward he will be honored and missed by so many.

Rest in perfect peace Mr. Jett. Well done.

Ever notice that a couple of the individual florets in the phlox look shriveled?

That’s normal!

This is a perennial phlox called David. There must be a hundred little tightly wrapped buds on this stem, all waiting to open. The florets open in an arc across time - the first pop open to get pollinated, then drop as more florets open to keep the bees coming back for more.

Go ahead and pick those little wilted ones off, or better yet, give the whole stem a wiggle! The little florets that pop off add a bit of whimsy to floor or kitchen counter, or the pile of dog hair they land on 😜

Editing your bouquet - plucking out the short lived flowers when their time is done, or trimming a petal or a leaf - can make your bouquet last longer and look better. It’s part of cut flower maintenance!
