Winter is in full effect here around Highlands, NC. I stood on a frozen lake for the first time in my life. That was cool. Snow and ice can be frustrating at times, but I believe it’s important to appreciate it. Everything serves its own purpose. I’ve been very busy with the animals lately. Keeping them fed and watered is a lot of effort, especially when most of the natural forage is dead, and the water freezes at night. It’s quite the challenge, especially as a newbie such as my self. This is my second winter farming. On top of that I have a job as a massage therapist, and I’m working on building a candle business. It can seem overwhelming at times. I just remind myself to be grateful for the good times and learn from the challenges as they come.

It’s winter and it’s time for hay and lots of it!

What should I do? Our young billy goat Cricket has gotten his head stuck in the fence almost every day over the last week. One morning he got stuck twice within a half hour. I figure he would learn, but it seems like he’s not. It’s almost like he enjoys it.

I made a new fragrance. It is a woodsy eau de parfum of seven notes composed around patchouli. It has a deep and earthy base with evergreen top notes and euphoric middle notes. I’ve been experimenting with perfume for about three years. I felt it was a natural progression from building candle fragrances. I really enjoy working with scent. It’s kind of cathartic. I like how it affects the mind. It can make you feel alert or calm. It can remind you of specific moments in the past. I like to formulate fragrances that help me connect with a deeper past. Often a primordial forest teeming with gnomes and other mystical creatures. A place many of us have forgotten, but still remains deep within the recesses of our memories. Or maybe I’ve just seen to many movies like Legend, Dark Crystal, Never Ending Story, Lord Of The Rings, Hook, and Disney’s animated version of The Jungle Book… yeah, that’s probably it.

We really enjoy Longcreek Market in SC. Even though we travel from Georgia, it is only about a 45 minute drive, and it is always worth it. The vibe there is always good and there are vendors with all sorts of awesome stuff! This is the first market we have ever attended and we plan to be there every Sunday, as long as they continue running!

I’ve been finding some interesting plants growing in the back of the farm. I’m planning to start cultivating the area and making space for beneficial/useful plants and also planting some fruit trees, native ornamentals, vegetables, and herbs.
