In my sketchbook are memories…
One memory I visit often is a year in Italy when I fell under the spell of the ‘grottesche’ paintings on the walls and ceilings around me… whimsical, magical creatures, always adorned with pearls, flora, and mystery.
Their enchantment and charm, the playfulness of those motifs, and the way I felt spending time in those places connecting to the past (my role as a researcher), present (practicing Italian with the ancient caretaker of a more ancient palazzina), and unknowingly to my future self.
At a recent photoshoot the mosaic floor in the entry at the hotel took me straight back there.
My sketchbook is a time capsule. A receptacle for memories, experiences and inspirations. And in many ways, so is my jewelry. That’s really what my work is about. History filtered through personal experience. Brought into the present moment, worn on the body.
I believe jewelry has the power to transform and transport us. To inspire the best version of ourselves. To carry us back to a time or place where we felt most alive, most inspired. Or to draw us toward the life we’re still reaching for.
