While 2017 was all about tropical green, warm neutrals, and sophisticated camel accents, color palettes took an edgier turn this year. Think fiery reds, metallics, and, of course, a lot of Ultra Violet — the Pantone color of the year. These home decor trends will continue to define the months to come and seep into 2019's design visual boards.

According to Pantone, metallics are no longer a dramatic color choice. In fact, they're part of the "new neutrals" for 2018, says Eiseman. Whether your choose to inset your ceiling with gold paper, like the room pictured here, or add a few gold accessories throughout your space, apparently gilded is the new white marble.

When you think of summer it’s all about the feelings of the outdoors. Flowers, plants and fresh fruit centerpieces make your home smell aromatic and look beautiful. For a more rustic feel, try bringing in eco-friendly materials like bamboo, h**p, and jute area rugs. These materials bring an exotic and natural feeling of the outdoors in. Spring and summer scream for light and airy colors. Use removable slipcovers, or decorative throws to bring bursts of color and brightness. Prefer whites and neutrals? White and khaki slipcovers are casual but can be dressed up with formal throw pillows in an instant.
One of the easiest things you can do to freshen up your home for summer is to add fresh flowers, branches, and even leaves from your own yard. It’s inexpensive and fun! Budding branches make for great decorative pieces. Assemble the branches in tall glass vases for high impact.

PROBLEM SOLVER 101:
20 EASY WAYS TO SOLVE EVERYDAY HOUSEHOLD PROBLEMS
If you drop your cell phone in water or spill water on it: just dry it off and then put the phone in an air tight container that is filled with rice and leave it overnight.
A soft-bristled brush is great for cleaning delicate fabric on lampshades.
To keep mattresses from sliding around on their foundation: put a non-slip rug pad between the mattress and box springs.
Never spray glass cleaner directly on a mirror. The drips could seep into the silver backing and damage the mirror. Instead, spray the cleaner on a piece of newspaper and wipe the mirror. Newspaper is BYFAR, the best thing for cleaning windows and mirrors.
To make threading a needle easier: cut the thread diagonally.
To remove water rings from vases: rub the area with salt and then wash.
To train a pet from getting on furniture: just cover your furniture with an old plastic shower curtain. It isn’t comfortable to lie on and the crunchy plastic makes an unpleasant noise when animals climb onto it, which they hate. After several days, your pet won’t get on the furniture.
To kill mildew and prevent it from returning to your refrigerator: clean the interior of your refrigerator with vinegar. Mix 1 part water with 1 part white distilled vinegar and use this with a cloth to clean the shelves and walls of your refrigerator.
To keep ants out of the house: find where the ants are entering the house and sprinkle a "barrier" of cinnamon or any type of ground pepper to block their way. The spices are too hot for the ants to cross.
Spray a small amount of WD-40 onto squeaky door hinges, then move the door back and forth to work in the lubricant. If that trick doesn’t work, lift the hinge pins up about halfway and lubricate them with three-in-one oil or WD-40, using a rag to catch drips.
For a showerhead that is slightly clogged up: if possible, remove the showerhead, dissolve 4-5 denture tablets in a bowl of water and put the head in it to soak. If the showerhead isn't removable, pour the denture tablet solution into a plastic bag, tie it to the fixture so the showerhead is completely immersed, and leave for a couple of hours.
To prevent the wax from melting and sticking to the inside of a votive candle holder: pour a bit of water in the holder, then place the candle on top. If you're reading this tip too late, and there's already wax stuck inside your candle holder, put it in the freezer for an hour. The wax will chip right off.
To remove price stickers and decals from furniture, glass and/or plastic: saturate with vegetable oil, wait a few minutes and then rub or peel the sticker off. Lighter fluid works best on glass and should NOT be used on plastic or wood.
Gum can sometimes be removed from fabric by using ice to harden and a dull knife to remove.
To clean a dusty chandelier: allow the fixture to cool. Wear a pair of white cotton gloves―one dry, one dampened with glass cleaner. (For crystal, use one part rubbing alcohol to three parts distilled water.) Wipe each prism with the damp glove, then use the other glove to dry the glass.
To remove pet hair from fabric or upholstery: try a pet rake (a brush with crimped nylon bristles), velour brush, tape roller or even tape wrapped around your hand. Use light, even strokes to remove the hair. Another option is to try the rubber bottom on a clean tennis shoe or a slightly dampened sponge (as long as the dampness won't harm the upholstery).
For wooden dresser drawers that stick: just rub the flat side of a unscented candle onto the bottom corners at the base of each drawer.
To keep insects out of food jars: use a bay leaf in each jar.
Protect your silver from moisture (which can cause tarnishing) by placing a few charcoal briquettes or a small bowl of rice in the cupboard where your silver is stored (rice and/or charcoal briquettes are both highly absorbent).

Decorating Ideas for Your Bedroom.....
The bedroom is usually the last area a person decorates...it should be one of the first. It is the place where you start your day and finish your day, the bedroom should be stress free and relaxing.

Start by doing your research. Gather clippings from magazine photos of ideas you like. It helps to measure the room and draw the shape on a piece of paper with all doors and windows included. (It is easier to draw and erase a king-size bed than it is to move it across the room.)

Picking colors can be made easy. Find items that you love and want to include in your bedroom décor: Things such as pillows, a favorite chair, artwork or vacation pictures. Then draw inspiration from those colors. Don't be afraid to use bold, bright hues on your bedroom walls, it will make a statement. If you don’t like it, you can always change the color.

Choose three patterns to use in your bedroom. Odd numbers, especially the number three, just seem to make things work, whether you're combining colors, patterns or decorating a table top. Three is the minimum number of patterns you should use, and the key to successful mixing is to vary the scale of each pattern.

Swap out your thick, winter drapes for something a bit breezier – like voile sheers. Not only will they create a gorgeous glow, but they will also help cut the heat of direct sunlight coming through your windows.

When it’s 90 degrees outside, the last thing that you want at the end of the day is to crawl into bed under a heavy, dark comforter. Instead, capture the light and airy feel of summer with your décor. It is more relaxing to change your bedding colors to reflect the seasons.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SOFA
CAN BE AN INTERESTING CHALLENGE
What size or style? Skirted or exposed leg? Round arms or track arms? A three-cushion, two-cushion or sectional sofa? Cost? All these are valid questions and you should address them before you begin shopping for a new sofa.
1 The Cost. Figure out your budget. A good quality sofa can cost a few thousand dollars.
2 What style are you looking for? Formal or casual? Traditional sofas tend to have skirts and rolled arms and can have three cushions or even a bench seat. A sofa with a track or squared arm will work just fine in a contemporary or modern home. Sofas comes in an array of styles. The style of a sofa is generally determined by three things: the arms, the back and the legs or skirt. There are about 11 styles of sofas to choose from: The Chesterfield, Classic English/Club, Tuxedo, Camelback, Sectional, Bridgewater, Knole, Lawson, Cabriole, Mid-Century Modern and the Cabriole.
3 Measure the space where the sofa will go. Determine the length of the sofa you need and also the depth of the sofa.
4 After you’ve determined, the size, style and approximate cost, think about construction, color and fabric. A sofa is one of the most essential pieces of furniture in your home. It's the one item that everything else evolves around. The average person will keep their sofa for eight years.
5 Become familiar with the basics of sofa construction.
The Frame: A well-built sofa has with a sturdy frame made of a kiln-dried hardwood, such as oak, maple or poplar.
The Suspension System: A sofa's suspension determines its bounce (how quickly it responds to support your weight when you sit on it). With the eight-way, hand-tied, steel-coil system, each coil is attached at eight different points to other coils and then the whole system is tied to the frame. Sofas with hand-tied coil suspensions will have higher price tags.
Cushions: Down or foam wrapped? Down tends to cost a bit more and are great for back cushions, while foam wrapped in down are great for the seats. Try several types of cushions...that’s the only way to know what’s right for you (look for this information on the hang tag on the cushion).
Upholstery: More than any other element, the upholstery you choose will affect the price you pay. So when selecting a fabric, you'll want to balance considerations of budget, aesthetics, and the material's durability.
6 Remember, you don’t need to spend a fortune for the right sofa. Just doing a little homework will save you time and money. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the construction, fabric wearability and the warranty.

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITION

If a candle goes out on its own on Halloween, it is thought a ghost has come to call.

A burning candle inside a jack-o-lantern on Halloween keeps evil spirits and demons at bay.

You invite bad luck into your home if you allow a fire to burn out on Halloween.

Children born on Halloween are said to have the gift of second sight, which includes the power to ward off evil spirits.

If you see a spider on Halloween night, it means that the spirit of a dead loved one is watching over you.

If you hear foot steps behind you on Halloween, don't look back. It may be the dead following you. Turning back could mean that you will soon join the dead.

Carry a lump of bread in your pocket when walking in the dark to serve as an offering to ghost.

Don’t look at your shadow in the moonlight on Halloween night. Otherwise, you will die within a short period of time.

If you see a ghost, walk around it nine times, and it will disappear.

Never slam a door. You might hurt a ghost, who'll haunt you for the rest of your life.

Holding your breath while by a cemetery keeps evil spirits from entering your body.

If a bat flies around a house 3 times, it is a death omen.

Ringing a bell on Halloween will scare evil spirits away.

Knock on wood to keep bad luck away.

A bat that enters a home may have been let in by a ghost.

Don't point at a grave or your finger will rot off.

If a black cat meows on your porch or near a window, a death will soon occur in the family.

You will have bad luck if you do not stop the clock in the room where someone dies.

Kill a black cat on Halloween and you'll have seven years of bad luck.

When a good life was lived, flowers will grow on the deceased's grave. But if the deceased was evil, weeds will grow.

If you hear 3 knocks and no one is there, it usually means someone close to you has died. The superstitious call this the 3 knocks of death.

33 MONEY SAVING TIPS
1. Save all your loose change. Putting aside your loose change each day over the course of a year will allow you to save around $500 for an emergency fund or for a special occasion. Also, aim for short-term savings goals, such as setting aside $20 a week or month. You can save more successfully when you keep a short-term goal in sight.
2. It pays to practice preventative dental care, since a good cleaning routine helps prevent cavities, root canals, and dental crowns, which are expensive and no fun.
3. Save money by buying items in bulk. Some companies even offer free shipping on large online orders. Clearance items are sometimes available, and good savings can be found on non-perishables such as groceries and diapers.
4. Sign up for every free customer rewards program you can. Even if you rarely shop at that place, having a rewards card for that place will eventually net you some coupons and discounts. Here’s the basic game plan for maximizing these programs: create a Gmail address just for these mailings, collect every card you can, and then check that account for extra coupons whenever you’re ready to shop.
5. Maximize yard sales. Stop by yard sales if you see them. Be careful about what you buy and negotiate to lower the prices. That way, you wind up with a really big bargain – or else you can just walk away with the money in your pocket, having at least been entertained for a bit.
6. Plan meals around your grocery store’s flyer. Instead of just planning your meals based on a cookbook or whatever you can dream up, plan all your meals around what’s on sale in your grocery store’s flyer. Look at the biggest sales, then plan meals based on those ingredients and what you have on hand, and you’ll find yourself with a much smaller food bill than you’re used to.
7. Drink more water. Not only does drinking plenty of water have great health benefits, water drinking has financial benefits, too. Drink a big glass of water before each meal and not only will you digest the meal better, you won’t eat as much (saving on the food bill). You may also find yourself feeling a bit better as you begin to get adequately hydrated.
8. Bring lunch to work. If buying lunch at work costs $9, but making lunch at home costs only $3, then in a year, you could afford to add over $1,000 to your emergency fund and still have money left over.
9. Invest in a deep freezer. A deep freezer, after the initial investment, is a great bargain. You can use it to store all sorts of bulk foods, which enables you to pay less per pound for it at the market. Even better, you can store lots of meals that have been prepared in advance, enabling you to just go home and pop something homemade in the oven.
10. The next time you make a casserole, make four batches of it and put the other three in the freezer. Then, the next time you need a quick meal for the family, grab one of those batches and just heat it up. Doing this allows you to buy the ingredients in bulk, making each casserole cheaper than it would be if you made each one individually.
11. Eat out one fewer time each month. If it costs you $25 to eat out, but only $5 to eat in, then the $20 you save each month allows you to almost completely fund a $500 emergency savings account or a “spluge fund”.
12. Use what you've got. Make dinner out of what's in your pantry and refrigerator at home at least once a week.
13. Ask your physician if it is possible to prescribe generic drugs. Generic drugs can cost several hundred dollars less to purchase annually than brand-name drugs.
14. Also, find the lowest-cost place to purchase prescription drugs. Make sure to check out not only your local pharmacist but also local supermarkets, area discount centers, and reputable mail-order pharmacies.
15. Purchase store brand over-the-counter medications. Store brand medications often cost 20-40 percent less than nationally advertised brands. The savings could easily exceed $200 a year.
16. Always make your monthly credit card payment on time. The $35 to $45 you save by not being charged a late fee each month on one card would save you about $500 per year.
17. Shop around for auto and homeowners insurance. If you are renewing your existing policies each year, check out the rates of competing companies. Their annual premiums may well be several hundred dollars lower.
18. Raise the deductibles on your auto and homeowners' insurance: If you are willing to pay $500 or $1,000 on a claim, rather than only $100 or $250, you can reduce annual premiums by as much as several hundred dollars.
19. Assess your need for life insurance coverage. If your children are now on their own, or if your spouse works, you may not need as much life insurance protection.
20. Consider dropping credit insurance coverage on installment loans. Many consumers don't need credit insurance because they have sufficient assets to protect themselves in the event of death, disability, or unemployment. Terminating this coverage often reduces financing costs by three percentage points, a savings of about $2,000 on a four-year $40,000 installment loan.
21. Change your oil about every 5,000 miles. This should prolong the life of your car engine. Clean your car’s air filter. A clean air filter can improve your gas mileage by up to 7%, saving you more than $100 for every 10,000 miles you drive in an average vehicle.
22. Keep your car engine tuned and its tires inflated to their proper pressure. Doing both can save you up to $100 a year in gas.
23. Shop around for gas. Comparing prices at different stations and using the lowest-octane (recommended by the car owner's manual) can save you hundreds of dollars a year. In some areas, websites post the locations of stations with the cheapest gas prices.
24. Choose home repair contractors wisely. Favor contractors who have successfully performed work for people you know. Insist on a written, fixed-price bid. Don't make full payment until satisfactory completion of the work.Check the internet for possible ratings and referrals.
25. Buy appliances based on reliability, not what’s cheapest at the store. It’s worth the time to do a bit of research on the internet when you buy a new appliance. A reliable, energy efficient washer and dryer might cost you more initially, but if it continually saves you energy and lasts for fifteen years, you’ll save significant money in the long run.
26. Ask your local electric or gas utility for a free or low-cost home energy audit. The audit may reveal inexpensive ways to reduce home heating and cooling costs by hundreds of dollars a year. Keep in mind that a payback period of less than three years, or even five years, usually will save you lots of money in the long-term.
27. Install a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature in your house automatically according to the schedule that you set.
28. Weatherproof your home. Caulk holes and cracks that let warm air that is inside your house escape in the winter and let cold air escape in the summer. Your local hardware store has materials, and quite possibly useful advice, about how to inexpensively stop unwanted heat or cooling loss.
29. Use window coverings to block or let in sunshine. In summer, use these coverings to block sunlight, keeping your house cool. In winter, open the coverings to let sunshine warm the house. You could easily save more than $250 annually while being more comfortable.
30. Assess clothing in terms of quality as well as price. Consider fabric, stitching, washability, and other quality related factors in your selection of clothes.
31. In families, discuss limits on monetary spending for gifts. These limits not only tend to reduce expenditures, they may also be greatly appreciated by many family members.
32. Do holiday shopping right after the holidays. Many people use this technique only for Christmas, but it works for every holiday. . Get a Mother’s Day card for next year the day after Mother’s Day. Get Easter egg decorating kits the day after Easter. Get wrapping paper and cards and such the day after Christmas. The discounts are tremendous, and you can just put this stuff in the closet until next year and save a bundle.
33. Visit our website, www.highpointfurniture.com, and save up to 65% on famous name brand furniture from the furniture outlets listed on our website.

Picking Paint Colors...Take your interior from drab to fab.

Wherever we go we respond to color, but the importance of color is often underestimated. Color use is important to us personally in our homes and in the places where we work.

•Start Small: If you're not sure where to begin with color, experiment in a bathroom, a small hall or area between rooms, or an accent wall. If you're doing your own painting, pick an area that's quick to do so you can see your results sooner. Look at the process as an adventure.
To get started, select a favorite color drawn from artwork, a rug, dishes and an accessory or furniture piece as a main color or accent.

•Think About Your Mood: When selecting a color, consider the mood of a room. In a bedroom do you want the feeling to be restful and soothing or dramatic and intimate? Soft, cool colors and neutrals usually create a quieter feeling while stronger colors are for drama.
Do you want a dining area to feel sociable and stimulating or appear formal and quiet? Warmer, contrasting and somewhat brighter colors add to a sociable atmosphere; deeper blue-greens and neutrals will give a more formal ambiance.
Do you want kid's rooms to create an active and exciting energy or an orderly and restful feeling? Be careful not to overstimulate your children with intensely bright hues. You may not know it, but some brighter colors can lead to unrest and irritability.

•Pay Attention to Lighting:The reason why paint stores have light boxes for you to test paint chips:
Natural daylight shows the truest color
Incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows
Fluorescent lighting casts a sharp blue tone
So, a strong color might be too bright and overpowering when used on all walls or next to a large window, but it might be effective when used as an accent wall with indirect light.
Test Your Color Choice: Boost your confidence by testing colors on poster board or large areas of a wall. Don't be afraid to go beyond your comfort zone. Consider strong, vivid colors or soft, deep neutrals like chocolate brown or olive green as main or accent colors. Or add drama with a stronger color on the ceiling. Tinted ceilings can dramatically change the whole look of a room.
Add Depth With Decorative Finishes: Transform flat, dull walls into interesting and personal spaces with subtle or dramatic visual texture and broken color. Burnished mineral/metal finishes and layered colored glazes add depth. Some examples of softly reflective metals are mica, copper, pewter, bronze and, of course, antiqued silver and gold.

Walk Into Another Room: Consider walls as planes of color, and see how they interact when viewing one next to the other in adjacent rooms. Approach it like a composition: You're in one room, but you're going to see a piece of another room through it. So as you're choosing colors, consider how they will flow from room to room to create your picture.

Color Trends: What's New for 2016?

Color forecasters draw information from the runway, auto manufacturers, the housewares industry, etc. They scour showrooms, trade shows and magazines for the current trends; they consider what's happening culturally and how this impacts our national mood. Then they take all of that information and translate it into what colors we'll be decorating with in 2016.

For the first time, Panetone’s Color of the Year 2016 brings together two shades -- Rose Quartz, a soft pink, and Serenity, a muted periwinkle-blue.

Shades of Gray from bold to dusty will also be popular: Gray covers a wide range of hues, soft gray to charcoal to hematite and gain interest from metallic and pearlescent accents.

Green continues to gain strength from its association with the growing shift toward eco-consciousness. It will show up in everything from fabrics to accessories to countertops.

Benjamin Moore and Glidden have made off-white hues their “color of the year” for 2016, while Sherwin-Williams and Behr are each showing an off-white in their 2016 color trend forecasts.

You'll see red as a bold accent in black-and-white designs; and look for pink in romantic bedrooms or even in the kitchen, from cabinetry to appliances.
