The history of Indigenous peoples in the Americas after European arrival is one of the most devastating demographic and cultural collapses recorded. Many Native communities faced disease outbreaks, violent conflict, forced removals, and loss of land over several centuries. Illnesses such as smallpox and measles spread faster than any army and caused massive population decline because Indigenous populations had no prior immunity. Alongside disease, there were also documented massacres, wars, and destructive policies that broke nations and displaced families from their homelands.
The often-repeated claim that 100 million Native Americans were killed specifically on American soil is not supported by most historians. Estimates for the entire population of the Americas before contact usually fall well below that number, and deaths came from multiple causes, not only direct killing. Still, many scholars and Indigenous historians describe elements of colonization — including certain campaigns and government actions — as genocidal in intent or effect.
Beyond the numbers, the human impact was profound. Entire languages, cultural systems, and governance structures were damaged or erased, while survivors endured relocation, boarding school systems, and treaty violations. Today, Native nations continue cultural renewal and legal efforts to protect land, identity, and rights, keeping historical memory alive while rebuilding for future generations.

Victorio the Apache: The Chihenne Warrior and His Legendary Family
Victorio, a prominent leader of the Chihenne Apache (also known as Mimbreño or Warm Springs), is remembered as one of the most daring and resilient chiefs of the 19th century. His strategic acumen and bravery established him as a symbol of Apache resistance against both the U.S. and Mexican armies.
Victorio was not alone in his endeavors; his sister Lozen, approximately 20 years his junior, was a formidable warrior and his closest confidante. Together, they had three additional sisters, whose alliances further reinforced the bonds within the Chihenne clan.
One of these sisters, Gouyen, married Kaywaykla, the son of Sánchez. Another sister aligned herself with Kayitah, one of the scouts who ultimately convinced Geronimo to surrender. The third sister married Nana, another revered Apache leader.
This intricate network of family ties and strategic alliances illustrates how the Apaches not only engaged in armed conflict but also employed social and political strategies to maintain the cohesion of their people amidst external pressures.

Oscar-winning Cherokee actor Wes Studi calls the Western genre U.S. “mythology" built around genocide.
It “makes heroes out of absolute villains," he says.
"Over the years, what’s happened is, I think people, and especially Indian people, and other minorities that have been affected by the way that the United States of America was built, we began to put pressure on the storytellers of the world, in that, 'Hey, what about us? Did you uh, did you ever stop to think that no, we didn’t disappear. You didn’t kill all of us. And we are still here, we have developed, and we have been a large part of your development?' I think we need to start telling stories in a way that is real. Enough of these fairytales. Enough of this making heroes out of people that weren’t actual heroes. Let’s talk about the fact that our present and our future depends on a better recognition of our past. And I think that some filmmakers, some studios, caught the gist of that and began to move in a direction that is hopefully more true to what our population is.”
Again: “We need to start telling stories in a way that is real. Enough of these fairytales.
