We hauled our 140 pairs by trailer and worked the last 40 late calves. It was a long day but overall went pretty well. Kyle, I and June got them in and then James, Kyle and I sorted, loaded and hauled them out. After school kids helped work the calves, sort cows and calves, and loaded out the trailers. So glad to have all the cows and calves on green grass. We are hoping for some much needed rain to keep everything green and growing especially with all the wind we have been getting!

Oh man we had a tough morning, like I wanted to puke and cry at the same. I got up early to prepare to haul cows out to pastures and when I was done saddling my horse I headed back to the house to wake the kids. I made the bad decision to let Rein follow the gator back to the house(40ish yards) I felt a bump and then heard terrible whining. She was dragging her hind leg. I woke the kids up and Citti and I comforted her the best we could. Rein went to West River Veterinary Clinic and they did x-rays and put on a splint to stabilize the back leg. I was so relieved it was not a broken hip or worse. Rein will need a lot of TLC the next 6 weeks but hopefully all will mend properly. Thanks to the staff and vets, we are extremely thankful and lucky to have them so close and so prepared to take on these kinds of emergencies.

This puts a big hiccup on our plans for training but hopefully after she heals we can continue. She was already starting to pick up commands and was really willing to learn.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers out there. It was a great day. Kids got me cards with thoughtful words and beautiful flowers (Doc Frank picked them out for the kids since Jordan been a little busy planting corn).

Here is a really nice group of pairs. 2 year olds with their first calf. We sold these heifers in the fall of 2024 and the new owners have done a fantastic job with them. If you are in the market for some young pairs these would be perfect! Selling at Lemmon Livestock Auction LLC May 13th.

Today was a good day. Kids had the day off from school and man oh man were they a welcome addition to the workforce. We got a lot accomplished, chores, fencing, moved cows, and rolled canola ground, while Jordan kept the corn planter moving.

May 7th Kyle finished seeding canola and Jordan started planting corn. It has been unusually cold so Jordan took the advice from the Channel Seed agronomist and held off planting until it warmed up again. As a special treat I brought Pastime Bar & Lounge Inc. supper and Conway to ride around on the first day of corn planting.

Cahan working hard for his room and board last weekend. Almost caught up to the drill. Hard to stay caught up when you have school, golf practices after school and a golf tournaments.

Cahan with a little help from his mom(me) moved the chicks and ducks to the heated barn. They are loving the new space and Rein is getting a lesson on “friends”. She thought they were lots of fun to chase so we had to nip that in the butt quickly.

We are officially done calving. First live calf was March 1st and last April 30th. It was a good calving season, just a few bumps but mostly smooth sailing. Now onto getting ready to go to summer pasture.

Last weekend Citti and I went down to the Price Family Ranch to help work a couple big bunches of bull calves. It was a good day even though it was cool and windy. Lots of good help!

Just a couple 11 year old besties wrestling a calf together. Technique is the key to making it easy.
