Sometimes, “side business” endeavors grow faster than a person can even imagine! This sounds ideal in concept, but maintaining quality and timeliness while handling all the demands can be taxing. When we opened Duluth Vacuum, we had everything we could imagine prepped and set, but it really isn’t until you click on the “OPEN” sign the first day that you really know what you’re getting into. There is always risk in small business.

Jessica Nelson and her co-worker, Katie, know this all too well. Jessica started Maid in Duluth, a growing residential and commercial cleaning service, just last year. She has already seen rapid growth and is genuinely in awe of the initial success.

Brandon had a chance to chat with Jessica and Katie about their small business, to let people know about another awesome service here in our area.

💁🏼‍♀️ Jessica shares, “I’m “made in Duluth” 😉 so the name Maid in Duluth really came from a love for this city and a nod to the area I grew up in.
I have 5 kids. We do anything outside on Lake Superior or the little lakes around as well. I really love the area and everything it has to offer, like the outdoor activities and season changes. I’ve always been a “busybody” so I really enjoy keeping active.

I started in the industry with post-construction cleanup. I really loved it. There’s just something about cleaning an empty space: just me, Katie, and a vacuum. From there, I developed a core client group who really helped me get my business off the ground! The referral snowball started and hasn’t stopped yet.

We still do the post-construction jobs and I also love residential cleaning. It’s great being the extension of a family and helping them live their best family life.

Currently, we have 45 clients (amazes me still!) and 7 employees. Our clients have become friends- we love being greeted by kids and pets when we arrive to tidy up. We hope to expand into other cities and keep doing what we do best!”

Dependable. Thorough. Trustworthy. These are the company values Jessica and Katie uphold at Maid in Duluth, LLC .

Thanks for sharing about your small business, Jessica!

“My formal education is in Elementary Teaching. For 10 years, over summer break, I worked at a Greenhouse. 🪴

I. LOVED. IT.

So when a friend of mine connected me with a local floral shop that needed help, I was very excited. Not only did they need hands, but there was potential to purchase the business. That put me in a new mindset… could I be a business owner in a field I adore?

I worked with them for about 5 years and learned SO much! They were awesome people with amazing business and design skills.

During the “2020 chaos”, I found myself taking a lot of responsibility at the floral shop, which gave me a new perspective. I made a shift; I decided to go “on my own” and start a new business.

To say I was terrified is an understatement- who starts a business during a time like that??

This Girl 🙋🏻‍♀️ apparently!

At that time, an online presence seemed to make the most sense, so that’s the direction I took with For Floral Sake.

Though I strayed from the original business plan, it ended up being the smartest move, considering the current situation. I’ve learned a lot of lessons in these 3 years!

We are an online, web-based, email based business. I lean towards Events and Weddings, as well as a Floral Subscription.

We do Floral Classes, which has been a really fun element to the business, probably because of my teaching background. 👩🏼‍🏫

We also kicked off an outreach program called “Remembering Moms.” Basically, I donate my time and materials to put together 10-15 bouquets, and then we deliver them to the women who’ve been nominated, just in time for Mother’s Day.

The community support has been incredible. You never know, when you jump into a business, how it’s going to go. And so, we will keep doing what we are doing with gratitude!”

- Beth, For Floral Sake

👋🏼Hey! Brandon here! We can absolutely relate here at Duluth Vacuum Co., as our store was also founded in that time of uncertainty. The business spirit shall not be shut down!! Adapting, growing, and serving are values we hold near as well.

Thanks, Beth, for sharing your small business story with us!

💡 Didja know?? The real power in a vacuum lies in the airflow, not the suction! 💨 It's the force of moving air that effectively picks up dirt and moves it into the bag or container. With an average airflow of 50-100 CFM, it's the key to superior cleaning power.

When you visit us, we'll take you through the workings of your potential new vacuum inside and out! 🌀 Whether you're all about the three simple buttons or the type who loves knowing the ins and outs of every machine you own, we've got you covered. No overload for the button lover, and a full geek-out session for the machine enthusiast! 🧹

👋🏼 Hey, welcome, TNT Xchange! I took a tour of this new shop specializing in Minnesota-based lines for humans, for dogs, for entertaining and for your home.

The cool thing about this quaint shop in Lincoln Park Craft District is it’s like a small business filled with small businesses. Mom and pop ventures, small batch goodies, great for gifting too.

At Duluth Vacuum, our team understands the significance of offering high-quality products that directly benefit families. This is why we take some time to share about the small business community here in our area.

Deep thoughts with the Vac Man…
Greater prosperity = greater waste. In other words, the more disposable income people have, the more products they dispose of.

These days, people look for cheaper, faster, more convenient.

This is in stark contrast to how past generations shopped. People used to know exactly what they bought, how to care for it, and how to make it last.

Grandpa called this stewardship.

Now days, however, most think shopping like Grandpa is “expensive”.

“Expensive” is how a throw-away society would view it, wouldn’t they? They’d focus only on the number debiting their bank account without considering ALL the factors.

Let’s think about this for a minute…

➡️ How many years will the item last?
➡️ Is there upkeep?
➡️ What about the time it takes to fix, shop for, and throw away this same item again… and again?

We Vacuum Folks (and our tribe) are different. Like true investors, we consider all the factors and make the best decision for longevity.

And guess what? Over time, we actually SAVE money. Imagine that.

Grandpa was on to something.

Thanks for joining me for an episode of Deep Thoughts with the Vac Man- until next time!

How mustard made our small business better...and made me a better person, too.

I’ve grown up hearing the phrase, “cut the mustard,” but until recently didn’t know the history behind it.

Did you know that back in the early 1900s, if you were a really great friend, an incredibly competent employee, or just a talented person...that you were known as “the mustard”?

Mustard wasn’t always just a condiment.

Mustard actually used to be the highest social compliment you could receive.

It was a reference to excellence or high quality.
It meant to surpass the standard of desired performance.

In other words, if you “cut the mustard” then you exceeded someone’s expectations. You had gone above and beyond. You had stood out among the rest.

You had made a difference.

It’s funny how little reminders or unusual stories like this can inspire you or realign your direction in life.

After all, that’s the kind of legacy I’d like to leave.

And as the Manager of a local small business, that’s certainly the kind of experience I want to create for my community.

I want both my personal and professional legacy to be one of excellence.

I want to have made a difference.

I want to live every day to “cut the mustard.”

This situation would make most folks squirm. Me? Nah.

In fact, call me crazy, but I actually look forward to conquering the mess. Because I most certainly will.

I look at this challenge like a seasoned technician: 1 part method, 1 part mechanics, 1 part ingenuity.

I analyze the carpet fiber, the pile, check for depth of foreign substance, and make a plan.

I grab my cleaner and get to work. I deploy my plan to perfection.

And I win….every time.

-Brandon

PS: My wife claims I don’t need to overthink the process, that I could just start up the machine and let it do the work. She’s probably right….

Black Friday vs. Small Business Saturday
One is for big box and one is for small biz.

Guess which one we get more pumped about…

The term Black Friday has been defined as the day retail businesses go “in the black” for the year. On this day, Big Business pushes quantity sales (and they must) because they barely make a profit per unit. They have huge ad budgets and ginormous warehouses.

Small business Saturday, however, is a nod to the little guy. Although we don’t want folks to feel pressured to give us attention just because there’s a theme for the day, we do truly appreciate the sentiment.

The fact of the matter is we are proud to serve this community.

We are proof that small but mighty exists, and that’s because you give us a chance and tell your friends about your experience.

So whether it’s a day that marks hitting the black or it’s a day that people recognize the role of small business, just know every day, every interaction matters in our “small” world.

Thank you.
