⚓ Celebrate Erie Canal History with Daisy Designs! ⚓

Did you know that the Seneca Chief was the packet boat that led the ceremonial opening voyage of the Erie Canal in 1825? The historic journey, known as the "Wedding of the Waters," carried Governor DeWitt Clinton from Buffalo to New York City, where he poured water from Lake Erie into the Atlantic Ocean, symbolically connecting the Great Lakes to the East Coast.

Inspired by this important piece of New York history, Daisy Designs has created a beautiful cutting board featuring the Seneca Chief on one side. This unique piece celebrates the boat that helped transform trade, travel, and industry throughout New York State and the Mohawk Valley.

A Surprise Visit from the Seneca Chief! With our very own Erie Canal Cruises going east for their scheduled school group tour in the background.

The Seneca Chief made an unscheduled stop at Gems Along the Mohawk in Herkimer on Thursday, June 11, at 10:30 AM.

A few lucky visitors who happened to be in the store at just the right time were treated to a special opportunity to step aboard and explore this remarkable vessel before she continued her journey to Rome, NY.

The unexpected visit created quite a buzz along the waterfront and provided a memorable experience for guests, offering a closer look at a boat that celebrates the rich history and heritage of New York's canal system.

Erie Canal Cruises begin Friday May 22 and end October 12. It's a 90 minute narrated historical cruise that goes through Lock 18. Times are 1pm and 3pm daily, with the exception of Mondays. Board at Gems Along the Mohawk and arrive 30 minutes before departure. Cost is $29 per adult, $27 military, $20 per child ages 4-12 and infants 3 and under are free.
