Excited to pick up this 1890s "Winton" bicycle, from neighboring Marion, KS, today.
The bike was donated to the local museum 50 years ago, but was put in the basement, never displayed, due to the poor wheel condition.
Winton went on to make early autos, including the first to cross the continental United States in 1903.
Winton's patents and advice was sought by Ford, and he continued work on automobiles and patents into the 1920s when he passed.
The family was apparently uninterested in a return of the bike and thus it was recently sold to benefit the museum.
Heck of a machine I'll be in need of some parts (pair of appropriate aged glue-on tires) and skilled assistance (wood rim restoration, if possible) to help it display better, at least!
NFS, atm; want it to stay in KS, but definitely interested in history, literature, advertisingetc re: the brand, model, and Winton.
