Rad hit theaters 40 years ago today, on March 21, 1986.

I was in 4th grade when this movie came out, right at the height of my BMX obsession. That same year I got a Huffy Sigma for Christmas. Maybe not a “real” BMX bike by some standards, but I loved it anyway.

The film starred Bill Allen as Cru Jones, Lori Loughlin as Christian Hollings, Talia Shire as Mrs. Jones, Jack Weston as Duke Best, Ray Walston as Burton Timmer, and Bart Conner as Bart Taylor. Rad only made about $2.0 million domestically in its original theatrical run, but it went on to become a genuine cult classic.

One fun fact: the movie’s riding scenes featured real BMX talent, and Eddie Fiola served as Bill Allen’s stunt double. And yes, the “Bicycle Boogie” scene is still unforgettable.
