⭐About this lecture:
The triage assessment is the very first step that occurs when a patient arrives in your clinic, and can significantly impact the course of that patient’s care throughout their stay. In this presentation we will review the basic history of triage, how it has evolved and how it is implemented in veterinary medicine. Steps of the triage process will be discussed including the visual assessment and primary survey as well as identifying appropriate questions to ask and how to use this information to categorize patients based on triage stability. Additionally, the participants will learn what normal and abnormal vital parameters are for various species, what to do if these vitals are outside of normal parameters and how to think critically through their triage assessment to determine what steps to take next and if immediate intervention is necessary . Finally, the participants will test their own triage skills by working through several case examples of commonly seen patient presentations in the emergency setting.
⭐SPEAKER: Ashley Tavares, CVT, VTS(ECC)
Ashley has been a licensed CVT in Massachusetts since 2014. She graduated from Holyoke Community College’s Veterinary Technology Program in 2014 where during her first summer of externships, immediately fell in love with emergency medicine. Additionally, she completed her BA in Mathematics in 2025. She worked in emergency/specialty for several years and in 2016 was accepted into the Emergency and Critical Care Technician Internship Program at The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. There she spent a year studying and practicing extensively within the ECC and Anesthesia departments to gain additional knowledge and skills in preparation to become a VTS in ECC, which she obtained in 2020. It was during her time in academia that she realized how much she enjoyed teaching others and sharing her knowledge with veterinary professionals of all levels.
