Thriving in Tie Dye ice dyeing and dropping the knowledge with Jacquard Procion MX dyes 🤗

“Did you know you can tie dye colored clothing?

You don’t need to do anything differently - just soak your pieces in soda ash for 20 minutes before dyeing and try to pick tie dye colors that will compliment the color of the fabric

For this one, I chose to use purple dyes because both blue and red blend nicely with purple so it doesn’t end up creating any weird effects when layering the colors. (For example: I would NOT choose to do earthy greens on a red blank because red + green = brown)

Fiber reactive dyes are very pigmented so they do cover a lot, but you’ll notice that there IS a definitive difference between these two colored dresses.

“Folks were asking about my process so here’s a quick video on it. FAQ below:

SAFETY FIRST: Don’t do this anywhere near your kitchen. Don’t use kitchen implements for any of this. Don’t skip the mask - dye powder is extremely fine and it would really, really suck if you got any in your lungs. Don’t skip the gloves you don’t want any of these chemicals on your skin.

DOES THIS MESS UP THE FABRIC? Nope! In fact nothing happens to it until you throw it in the dye bath. If you mess up the print, you can toss it into a washing machine and it’ll come right out so you can start over.

DO YOU REALLY NEED SYNTHRAPOL TO WASH THE DYE OUT? Probably not. The point of using it is to prevent bleeding or any color from going anywhere you don’t want it to. Dish soap works just fine for my purposes. If I were dyeing silk or trying to get a stain out of vintage fabric though, different story - synthrapol all the way.

DO YOU NEED TO ADD SALT TO THE BATH? This is part of the dyeing instructions and is supposed to help color fixing. Considering I kinda like the muted no-color of this, I usually skip it.

DO YOU PRE-WASH? I am lazy and see above comment RE: color muting so no.

DOES YOUR LAUNDROMAT HATE YOU? Actually the lady complimented it last time I was there! She knows I wasn’t dyeing this AT the laundromat and it was clear that I’d done an initial washout at home. YMMV.

WHAT DOES THAT EVEN SAY? “OMW TO F*CK UP YOUR LAP TIMES” - it’s supposed to be a passive-aggressive riding message
