It’s SEEDTIME weekend! Happy 40 years to a legendary Eastern Kentucky tradition of getting down and celebrating mountain culture. Hoping everyone has a blast being their most Appalachian selves in Whitesburg celebrating music and culture and killing time together.

New at the Newt!

~ OFFSEASON by Avigayl Sharp ~ A fiercely observant but self-deluded narrator finds herself teaching at an all-girls boarding school on the Eastern Seaboard. She consorts and canoodles with the town’s locals implicating everyone she meets in her obsessive quest to pin down where, exactly, her own life went wrong. Though she’s vowed never to return to her hometown in the middle of the country, the holiday sends her careening back into the orbit of her overbearing, maladjusted family. The past collides with the present—but catharsis and closure are nowhere to be found. Not at the bar. Not in her childhood home. And certainly not in the unruly spirals of her mind.

~ THE LAND AND ITS PEOPLE by David Sedaris ~ In his newest book of essays Sedaris investigates what it means to be a traveler, a brother, a lifelong friend. With a buffet of topics as absurd as the man himself…he challenges someone to eat a truck tire, confides in a Duolingo bot on family matters, rides a horse named Tequila, gets bitten by a dog, and counts those he couldn’t bear to outlive and realizes how many are already gone. At once acerbic and tender, playful and profound—Sedaris shows how much there is to marvel at when you keep your head up and your eyes open, observing with warmth and curiosity our fascinating human species and the lands we inhabit.

~ THE BEASTS OF THE EAST by Andrew Moore ~ A celebration of the extraordinary lost natural wonder of the eastern US—once the center of American wildness before its despoliation—and a lively tour through recent efforts to return elk, bison, wolves, and other creatures to their verdant native landscapes. 🗓️ Join us for a book talk about this new book on Friday June 12th, 5:30 pm at Bobby Davis Park and Museum.

Two weeks from today! 🗓️

Join us for a special evening with Andrew Moore at Bobby Davis Park on Friday June 12th from 5:30-7:30pm. His previous book PAWPAW is a huge customer favorite at the Newt and we can’t wait to explore BEASTS OF THE EAST and talk about elk in Eastern Kentucky. Andrew will be joined in conversation by Will Bowling, and there will be a book signing following the reading with books available to purchase. Light refreshments will be served.
