Join us as we kick off Kentucky Writers on the Road in Hazard, Kentucky on May 16. The event will be held at Bobby Davis Museum and Park from 4:00—6:00 p.m.

The featured reader will be 2025 James Baker Hall Book Award Winner Willie Davis reading from his winning entry, Honeysuckle Season set in Hazard.

As a product of Appalshop parents who divorced early in his life, Hazard became the drop-off point for spending weekdays in Lexington and weekends in Whitesburg. Willie still has family in Hazard and some of his characters are based (very loosely he will say!) on early Hazard memories.

The second reader on May 16 will be Hazard poet Jordan Whitaker.

The event is free to the public and light refreshments will be served by Shenanigans.

New at the Newt!

~ IF ONLY THE RAIN WOULD COME by Natalie Sypolt ~ At the center of this gritty novel-in-stories is Hazel. A teacher at the local elementary school, she is intelligent, introspective, and lonely. When her secret lover, Walker, dies and his identical twin, Sam, comes home from Afghanistan looking just like the dead, Hazel’s world is shaken. As the residents of Warm, West Virginia, cope with addiction, grief, poverty, and abandonment, Hazel must confront her own life choices and weigh their cost.

~ PYTHON’S KISS by Louis Erdrich ~ Written over the past two decades, Louise Erdrich’s story collection features a range of characters—a tribal newsletter editor, immigrant farmers, and ordinary people, bird lovers, artists, grade-school teachers, and romantics. These stories offer an opportunity to celebrate the wisdom and brilliant, bountiful imagination of one of America’s most important writers.

~ FAMILY OF SPIES by Christine Kuehn ~ A propulsive, never-before-told story of one family’s shocking involvement as N**i and Japanese spies and the pivotal role they played in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Jumping back and forth between Christine discovering her family’s secret and the untold past of the spies in Germany, Japan, and Hawaii, FAMILY OF SPIES is fast-paced history at its finest and will rewrite the narrative of December 7th, 1941.
