Built by hand in America, the Mason & Hamlin Model 50 upright carries forward a tradition of piano making that began in Boston, Massachusetts over 200 years ago.

This beautiful upright is truly one of a kind, featuring:

• Eastern White Spruce Soundboard – The soundboard wood favored by the finest American piano makers during the Golden Age of piano building. Today, the Model 50 is the last upright piano still built with this prized material.

• Full Perimeter Plate – A design innovation that originated in Boston in the 1830s, adding strength, richness, and greater tonal color to the piano. Now only used by Mason & Hamlin.

• Advanced Composite Action – Designed by Mason & Hamlin to deliver exceptional consistency, responsiveness, and resistance to changes in humidity.

The result is a compact piano with the iconic American sound: a golden tone that is warm, resonant, and sings with remarkable depth and character.

Proudly handcrafted in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

The thickest and most robust rims in the world are found in every VX Series Mason & Hamlin piano, from upright to concert grand. Their strength is not intended for spectacle, but for purpose—an enduring expression of craftsmanship, structural integrity, and musical refinement that reveals itself over a lifetime of performance.

As early as 1895, Mason & Hamlin designers understood that the rim is the structural and acoustic foundation of the piano. A dense, exceptionally strong rim channels and preserves energy by reflecting vibrations back toward the soundboard, rather than allowing them to dissipate into the cabinet itself. This thoughtful conservation of energy enriches the piano’s depth of tone, power, and sustain, while also contributing to the instrument’s long-term stability and quiet resilience through generations of use.

The result is a piano whose beauty is not fleeting or ornamental, but deeply rooted in performance, longevity, and the enduring character of its voice.

The Wide Tail Design...

All VX Series Mason & Hamlin pianos follow the Mason & Hamlin Golden Age design principle, including a wide tail design. These generous dimensions allow for a larger soundboard and longer strings, creating a deeper, richer bass and a more powerful tone.

The VX Series pianos capture that original Mason & Hamlin golden tone that is warm, with blooming harmonics that grow and shimmer. Today, these pianos showcase a growling, full bass, singing tenor voice, and bell-like treble.

One thing pianists notice right away with WNG composite shanks is the consistency.

Because the moving parts from key to hammer are more uniform from note to note, the touch feels smoother and more even across the keyboard. That means fewer distractions from one key feeling different than the next, and more freedom to focus on expression, phrasing, and sound.

It’s a subtle difference you can feel under your fingers.

🎹 Is a thicker piano rim really worth it?

Most people think about the soundboard, strings, or action when they think about piano tone. But one of the most important parts of the instrument is something many never think about at all: the rim.

🏛️ Why it matters

At Mason & Hamlin, we build the thickest rims in the industry because the rim does far more than shape the piano’s silhouette. It helps shape the life and sound of the instrument itself.

🔍 What does the rim actually do?

A piano rim serves two major functions:

It helps hold the structure of the piano together and plays an important role in protecting the crown of the soundboard.
It helps reflect sound back through the instrument, enhancing projection, resonance, and sustain.

✨ Why that matters to the pianist

A thicker, stronger rim helps create a more stable piano, a longer-lasting instrument, and a richer acoustic experience.

Philosophy of building pianos 🎹✨

Since 1854, every Mason & Hamlin piano has carried two Latin phrases that capture the heart of our philosophy:

🌿 Palmam qui meruit ferat — “Let the one who has earned the palm bear it.”
⭐ Sui generis — “In a class of its own.”

These words reflect the values that have guided us for more than 170 years: earned excellence, innovation, and uncompromising craftsmanship.

Handmade in New England by over 30 skilled craftsmen, each Mason & Hamlin piano takes more than a year to build 🛠️—a remarkable process devoted to creating an instrument truly in a class of its own.
