Sad but true: It is very, very hard to find a home for a husky. We're not quite sure why. Sure, huskies are clever. They like to speak and let you know their opinions. Some might say they are alot of dog. But we love dogs, so alot is fine with us!
And it's apparently fine with other people too. Because breeders keep breeding huskies and buyers keep buying them. Still, like any breed, huskies wind up abandoned or stray or surrendered (or worse) and find themselves needing a place to go. But it seems sometimes like no one will take them.
Case in point: This boy, named only Husky, was purchased in Mexico. Yes, Mexico. Huskies shed - double so during a Mexican summer and Husky's buyer didn't like all that hair. So Husky's buyer tried to sell him. He tried to sell him to us at Mutt Mutt Engine, but we don't buy dogs. We did tell Husky's person that we had a loving place for him and would find him a wonderful home. "I can knock off 10%," the person said. We replied, "No."
A month passed. Husky's owner called us at 10pm one night. He said if we didn't come get the dog in the morning, he'd turn him out into the street. "I'm heading out of town," the man said.
We were there in the morning.
Poor Husky was worse for wear. A young dog, he'd lost weight when he should have been gaining it. Under his dull, patchy coat he was all skin and bones. And Husky was very dejected. The youthful sparkle he should have had was gone, replaced by something like resignation.
In Nirva's care, Husky bounced right back. His coat regained its gloss. His smile returned. He told us about his past, and his future.
But for nearly six months now, not one rescue partner has yes to Husky. We've contacted a number of husky-centric rescue groups too, but still...crickets.
Husky is nearly a year old now. He's beautiful, friendly and kind. Perhaps if we network Husky together, he'll at long last find the home he's been telling us about for so long now. Husky knows it is out there, and so do we.
