🕑 “How long should my child practice day?” 🕑

Great question! It depends on several things:

- How old is your child? Younger kids have shorter attention spans and are usually beginners, while older kids can focus for longer and may have more music to practice.

- How serious are they about their instrument? If they want to be a concert-level musician, then they’ll need to practice a lot! But if they’re just learning to have a good time, then of course less practice is okay.

No matter how long they practice, two things are most important: practicing every day and practicing correctly!

Did you know that the first string instrument dates back to around 13,000 BC? Archaeologists believe that a cave painting of a hunting bow in France is actually of a single-stringed music bow, the earliest known ancestor of modern string instruments.

The earliest version of modern string instruments were developed in the early 1500s. People have enjoyed playing these for centuries. Think of that legacy next time you pick up your string instrument!

Studies have shown that those who had music training were generally smarter than their counterparts; children who learned to play musical instruments did better in their academic studies than children who had not.

Once you learn to play one instrument in a family (strings, woodwinds, percussion, etc.) it is easier to learn to play the other members of that group.

While bagpipes tend to be considered a Scottish instrument, the truth is that before the Scots, bagpipes in one form or another were played in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and even other European countries.

If you are left-handed, there are guitars available to accommodate your unique needs. They are not simply right-handed guitars that have their strings reversed, but they are modified to correct tonal expressions and the dynamics.

“Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.” – Sarah Dessen

The length of time strings last depends on your level of skill and tolerance. If you are beginner, a year is a reasonable amount of time. As you become more experienced and learn the nuances of tone and pitch, you will probably change your strings more frequently.
