Stories of Caring for Neglected Children and Needy Souls on the Mission Field

A thin, filthy child wearing only a tattered shirt sat on the dirt floor crying dejectedly. Beside her lay an empty baby bottle. Had her mother left her with only weakened coffee?

Many innocent children suffer neglect and trauma. U***d mothers may not have the means to provide for them. Parents may be incarcerated, preoccupied with selfish interests, or no longer living. Whatever the reason, young lives and eternal souls are at risk.

In the 1970s and '80s, hundreds of children at the Sansón Children's Home in Honduras benefited from the compassion and godly influences of their Christian caretakers. All of them were touched by God's love, and some grew up to live inspiring, godly lives.

The first section of Candles in the Night is a collection of accounts related to the children's home. The second section consists of inspirational mission stories. Missionaries and local believers overcome cultural hurdles, find grace for fears and weariness, and share Christ's message of hope. Wherever they live, Christians display the light of Jesus.

Dave Bontrager had a burning passion in his heart—to tell the people in communist countries about Jesus. He took many trips to countries behind the "Iron Curtain" to supply the people with food, Bibles, and the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Taking Bibles across the border was always dangerous. But that was the only way to get them in. Or was it? One day Dave and his friend Lewis came up with a plan. Why not float them in? Would it work?

Jesus Through the Iron Curtain is the fascinating story of how God helped Dave in his many adventures. Read how God worked in surprising ways—through the presence of children, through a man with bright blue eyes... and even through a bouquet of wildflowers.

*Translating the Spanish Bible in a time of danger. A story of faith, perseverance, and triumph.*

How can I learn to know God? Casiodoro wondered. How can I know if my sins are forgiven? According to the priests, if you confessed your sins to them and recited enough prayers, God would forgive you. But why didn't it bring peace? And why did God seem closer out in the fields than during Mass? His father said these were dangerous thoughts.

If only he had a Bible to read! Then he could find answers to his questions. But in Spain, in the 1500s, there was no Spanish Bible—only a Latin one, which few people could read. The priests said that was all they needed. And the Roman Catholic Church did not take kindly to new ideas...

One day Casiodoro got a taste of what God's Word would be like in his own language, and a flame started to burn. Thus began a dangerous quest to translate the Bible into Spanish. His new translation was so well done that a revised version is still being used today.

This gripping story of Casiodoro de Reina's mission is one of determination, suffering, and betrayal. It is a story of the horrors of the dreaded Catholic Inquisition. Above all, it is a story of triumph-of how the Word of God is stronger than fire.

Elizabeth longs to live a life of sacrifice. So why has her desire been thwarted?

As widespread persecution enveloped Belgium during the late 1500s, Elizabeth and her husband Marcus faithfully encouraged other believers. But how could Elizabeth do her part when her days became filled with sickness? Could she still fulfill what she believed was her calling from God?

Then her friend Nelleken was captured and imprisoned. Through her friend's example in difficulties, Elizabeth learned to see her own trials as an opportunity to offer a sacrifice of praise.

"By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name." HEBREWS 13:15

Zander, Tillie, and Hattie flapped their beautiful wings and waddled to the big creek. It was a good day to be a goose, a good day to dip and splash.

One day, Hattie started laying eggs and sat on the nest for a long time. When at last two goslings hatched, Zander and Tillie were just as excited as Hattie was.

Day after happy day went by, while daffodils bloomed and the grass became greener. Every day is a good day because God created it and watches over everything with tender care.

A Biblical Guide to Experiencing True Heart Transformation

The heart is a marvelous thing. It is created by God, for God. It has longings and desires and out of those, man responds. Our heart was designed to worship God.

However, sin damages our hearts, deadens our conscience, darkens our understanding and mind and warps our desires. It enslaves the will, clouds our judgement and alienates us from God.

Then there is cleansing. Through repentance, confession, acquaintance and fellowship with God, the heart is changed and recreated into the likeness of Him who loved and died for us. Now we have a new and clean heart with new desires and longings. One that is changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Through having a love for Truth and experiencing God's love in our hearts we can have A Heart for God.

This book is written for those who love light and are willing to expose their hearts to God and man. It is written on a scriptural basis with clear outlines with an easy reading style. The reader will be challenged, inspired, instructed, and changed into a vessel that is fit to bring glory and honor to Christ's kingdom.

Thirty-One Prayers of Gratitude to God for Who He Is

Nothing shapes God's children like true worship, and nothing stunts our spiritual progress like holding distorted views of God.

We may know how we ought to live and what we ought not to do. We may listen to great sermons and read wonderful Christian books. But lies about God will keep us from the life-giving depths of relationship with Him and will likewise keep us from becoming like Him.

Each of the thirty-one readings in Thank You, God! names a common distortion of who God is, followed by Scriptures describing the truth about Him. They end with a prayer of reflection and thanksgiving.

Finding inspiration in Oregon's great outdoors for a closer walk with God.

Peace is not the absence of conflict—but rather a daily communion with and a willing surrender to the Prince of Peace.

For many years, Pete Lewis has found inspiration in nature and day to day happenings. This one-year devotional contains 365 of his writings, most of which were originally published in the bimonthly publication Beside the Still Waters.

Suitable for personal or family devotions, A Daily Surrender challenges us to follow God whole-heartedly and to seek a closer walk with Him. As we read each day's devotional and the associated Bible reading, we will be encouraged to see God in everyday occurrences and in the beauties of creation. We will be pointed to God's sovereignty and be reminded that serving Him takes a daily commitment—a daily surrender.

A Good Story • A Scriptural Application • Lives Enriched and Strengthened

In Mountain Meditations, Richie Lauer shares stories from his personal life and history. A reader once commented that Richie's stories are "like a walk down an unfamiliar and winding country road. The journey itself is enjoyable but the destination may prove different than you expected." The stories range from humorous to bizarre but the intention is to encourage your Christian walk.

These stories are drawn from the Mountain Meditations column, which Richie has written for Plain Communities Business Exchange for many years.

Richie Lauer grew up in western Pennsylvania and lives today with his wife Kathy (Hershberger) Lauer in southwestern Virginia. He has three grown sons, a daughter in Heaven, and a growing tribe of grandchildren. He serves as the bishop at Island Creek Mennonite Church and has worked for many years with Anabaptist Foundation.
