The Autumn Springs Retirement Home Massacre by Philip Fracassi. [ARC, to be released later this year 2025]. Simply put, this work is beautiful. Philip Fracassi has no boundaries! There are no genres, no limits, no characters this guy can not bring to life, and put dead center in your life, as you read his words. Rose Dubois is fierce yet compassionate and caring woman in her late seventies. She is a final girl in what seems to be (to her, at least) a serial killer spree in her beloved retirement home. Her dearest friends are dying off quicker than expected. Is it because they are old? Are they accidents? Are they murders? Rose and her best friend Miller (a love interest, perhaps) are true crime junkies, as well as highly educated retired teachers. Who more perfect than to investigate? The police just chalk it up to elderly folks dying the way elderly folks die. This tale weaves Fracassi”s mastery for horror (this time as a slasher), his great sense of humor, and a plethora of love and devotion (to friends and family, and the will to live life to its fullest). I couldn’t put the book down. I read the entire novel in three sessions in twenty four hours. Pure gold. Imagine Stephen Kings cast of kids in The Body (aka Stand by Me) but with elderly people. The emotion and love of the Oscar winning film Cocoon… the wit and appeal of the Twilight Zones “Kick the Can”… and yet the horror and slasher who-done-it vibes of Wes Craven’s Scream. Beautiful, plain and simple. Please read this. Please make this into a film. As a fu**ed up society in this often ugly modern time, it’s a book like this that can make things better (at least for a little while). Rose Dubois - thank you! Philip Fracassi - thank you!
