Announcing July's Walk With A Doc, featuring Dr. Willie Ewing of Adventist Health in the Central Valley/Adventist Health Hanford!

Self-validation is a skill that takes practice. It wont be easy at first. To begin, try to do or say at least one self-validating thing per day (see ideas below) and then after youve got that down, strive for two and so on. With practice, it will become second-nature to validate yourself. And as you get better at validating yourself, youll seek less external validation and youll have less tolerance for people invalidating you, too.

You can try gently reminding yourself of two truths: First, there’s nothing wrong with emotions. After all, emotions aren’t the same as behavior. For example, a person can feel angry (emotion) and then talk with someone about how they can fruitfully address the situation (behavior) or yell at someone and call them names (behavior). The emotion is the same, but the first behavior is healthy, and the second is not. Second, try to remind yourself that how you feel is a part of your inner world, but it doesn’t define you as a person. Just like pain when you scrape your knee, or the release of tension in your back doesn’t define you, an emotional experience doesn’t either. You’re far beyond what you feel in the moment, and what you feel is okay.

A solid antidote for toxic positivity from mental health professionals is called genuine optimism. In this case, the basic idea is to maintain a positive attitude without canceling and denying the whole emotional spectrum. Οptimism is a more profound emotional state. It is about accepting and balancing the seemingly conflicting emotions we may feel in a difficult period. This acceptance releases the tension created when we do not recognize or want to avoid the feelings caused by a negative situation.
In this way, our optimism becomes genuine and is not related to a false view of the situations in our lives. We treat the situation, that is, as it is, and let ourselves go through all the stages of its processing.
