When do I need to replace my sax pads? That depends on how much you use your sax, condition of pads (dried or torn leather), age of pads, storage temperature and humidity storage conditions, if they are leaking or not (not sealing 100%) and of course if you intend to sell it as is or with new pads and regulating materials (corks and felt) and sleeves, working springs, etc. to fetch a higher price. If the leather pads are not dried up, tearing or falling off and they are sealing well, I say leave them alone.

I no longer polish and re-lacquer saxophones. I can remove(strip) old lacquer off horns and hand polish them, but no applying of new lacquer. All silver plated horns are hand polished.

Protect your sax and sax case against these beetles that eat your leather sax pads and case: Dermestidae is a family of Coleoptera that are commonly referred to as skin beetles. Other common names include larder beetle, hide or leather beetles, carpet beetles, and khapra beetles. There are approximately 500 to 700 species worldwide. They can range in size from 1 to 12 mm. Key characteristics for adults are round oval shaped bodies covered in scales or setae. There are 2 options recommended.
The first option is a pest repellent designed for cloth. Two brands are "Sawyer's Permethrin" or "Repel Permanone" which bond to cloth. These can be found at an outdoor sports goods store or online. Odorless and relatively permanent, it is the our treatment of choice. To apply it, first remove everything from the case, including the instrument, bows, and anything in the accessories pockets, spray the interior of the case according to the directions, including accessories pockets and inside the bow holders, and allow to dry as directed. After it has dried, you may place everything back in the case.
The second option is using a bug-repelling botanical like cedar essential oil. Cedar oil may be found at storage supply stores. It is a little less reliable than the before-mentioned spray and will need to be reapplied periodically. It has a residual odor, which you may or may not find offensive. To apply cedar oil, remove everything from the case, spray once near where the sax will sit in the case, and once by the neck storage end. Only use two spritzes. Allow the case to dry in roughly 1-2 hours and then you may place everything back in the case.
