For a lot of gardeners, August is the toughest part of the gardening year. It's hot, the weeds are growing like...well, weeds, the spring and early summer flowers are over, and fall color is still a few weeks out of reach. There's a lot of plants that are just now coming into their prime, though, for both flower power and pops of foliage color/texture. Here's a sample of our favorites from the nursery over the last week or so.

Every bee in the neighborhood seems to have descended on our Hydrangea aspera after the rains this week. They do have excellent taste. 😎

Temperatures this weekend are FINALLY more amenable to planting (and frankly to existing outdoors at all), so we're celebrating! For three days only (Friday, July 10th through Sunday July 12th), all our perennials will be 30% off. Our sale on Kalmia, Pieris, and both evergreen and deciduous Rhododendrons has dropped to 25% off (valid for both container and B+B plants), plus #10 and larger containers are 15% off. It's a little bit of something for everyone, and to whet your gardening appetites, this is a tiny taste of some of what's on sale.

Some of our favorite hydrangeas are those that offer pizzazz beyond the flower power. There's a wealth of foliage textures and colors in the world of hydrangeas that elevate the plants from occupying a period of limited interest to a true cornerstone of a landscape planting, and these are just a handful of our favorites.

If we've managed to pique your interest in this genus and you'd like to learn more, our horticulture manager Adam Wheeler will be conducting a Zoom lecture on the topic on Wednesday 7/8 at 7pm, and you can register to attend here: https://www.brokenarrownursery.com/july-8th-2026-lacecaps-mopheads-sterile-florets-hydrangeas-adventurous-gardeners-zoom-7pm-eastern.html

We are excited to introduce our new design consultant, Britney Soubannarath!

Britney, a graduate from UCONN with a degree in Landscape Architecture, joined the nursery this spring as a sales associate and horticulturist and is now starting to offer landscape design consultations and planning services! If you've ever struggled to make sense of your landscape or needed expert help figuring out how to renovate an area, getting that help is now as easy as filling out a form online (here: https://www.brokenarrownursery.com/consultation) and setting up a time to talk. Whether your job is large or small, Britney has an incredible eye for layering colors and textures and can help you make your outdoor space whatever you dreamed it could be.

The world of hydrangeas is a massive one, and not everyone realizes that it encompasses vines as well as shrubs (and some perennials!). Recently reclassified from Schizophragma over to Hydrangea, Hydrangea fauriei is another of the rarest plants we grow and one that deserves the double takes it often gets when in flower. Massive, 10-12" heads of fertile flowers are surrounded by tapered, snow white bracts that flutter in the breeze like feathers. Downy gray-green leaves and rich cinnamon-chocolate stems only amplify the wow factor.

One of the rarest hydrangeas we carry, Hydrangea x versicolor is a hybrid between Hydrangea (formerly Dichroa) febrifuga and Hydrangea macrophylla that we first acquired as X Didrangea. Thankfully it's easier to grow them than to keep up with their botanical classification! While they might be a stretch for some of our colder zone customers, for those in zone 6b or lower they're a low maintanence, easy grower with some of the most unique flowers we've seen. Pearly pink buds open to lavender-bluish, star-shaped flowers with blue stamens and the color intensifies the older the clusters get. And if that wasn't enough, it'll definitely stymie your plant geek friends trying to figure out what it is!

From panicle hydrangeas to the world of smooth hydrangeas, our native species is one of the best options out there for color in shady areas. Hydrangea arborescens 'NCHA3' Invincibelle Ruby is one of our favorites for the strong, flop resistant stems and brilliant color year after year, and because they bloom on both old and new wood, inopportune pruning or a bad winter won't wipe out your flowers for the year.

One of the best parts of summer is the kick off of hydrangea bloom time! There's such a diversity of species and cultivars that you can have a hydrangea in bloom for virtually the entire summer if you wanted to, so this year we thought we'd highlight some of our favs as we move through the year.

One of the first to start blooming, and definitely a staff favorite, is Hydrangea paniculata 'Daruma', a stunning compact panicle hydrangea with generous clusters of flowers that age to a gentle pink. Our landscape plant is one of the most gawked at plants we have when in full flower, and it's well on its' way! If you spot it while walking around the nursery, tell one of the sales associates to win a free Broken Arrow sticker!

If you aren't already on our email list, you may not be aware, but it's finally time for our yearly Pieris/Kalmia/Rhododendron sale! The blooms may be nearly past, but there's plenty of interesting foliage about, and it's a great opportunity to fill holes that have emerged over the winter on a budget. While supplies last, all container and B+B Pieris, Kalmia, and Rhododendrons (both evergreen and deciduous) are 15% off!
