November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, and with it, we wanted to provide some safety tips so you can recognize and prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning!
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly if not detected. It also comes from incredibly common sources! Carbon monoxide is produced whenever fuels, such as gasoline, oil, kerosene, or even wood and charcoal, are burned. When inhaled, it replaces the oxygen in your body, causing flu-like symptoms even amongst the healthiest of people.
What can we do to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning? Here are some tips:
- Make sure all appliances work and are fully vented
- Have heating systems and chimneys inspected by qualified technicians yearly
- Do not use ovens and gas ranges to heat your home
- Do not operate gasoline-powered engines (cars, mowers) in confined areas (Garages, basements, etc.)
- Keep portable generators out of your home
- Install CO Alarms!
Carbon Monoxide alarms are one of the most important items for the home; it can save your life! These alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for placement and height, test them monthly, and make sure the batteries are fresh.
Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer, but it can be prevented. Stay safe and stay informed!
