but even more rare is the glued note on the front end page, which I can’t seem to fully interpret - please help if you can read it! “Arthur Murphy gave this book to his niece … 1907… the time of… England”

Arthur Murphy, the Irish writer, was born 1727 and died 1805. No possible way to have given this book to his niece in 1907. However, his painting by was in 1907.

Another piece to the puzzle that doesn’t quite fit - The Zenana and minor poems was published 1839… he was already deceased.

We’re big fans of Philip K. Dick so we are excited to get our hands on this gem! An advance reading copy of one of his earlier novels. It’s his only novel that remained unpublished until 2007.

We all know him for his amazing sci-fi stories but this one stands out on his own for not being sci-fi.

Available now in our store.
Condition: In excellent shape. Contains some very minor signs of shelf wear.

About this novel: Stuart Hadley is a radio electronics salesman in early 1950s Oakland, California. He has what many would consider the ideal life; a nice house, a pretty wife, a decent job with prospects for advancement, but he still feels unfulfilled. Something is missing from his life. Hadley is a restless young man―an artist, a dreamer, a screw-up. He reacts to the love of his wife and the kindness of his employer with anxiety and fear. He tries to fill his void first with drinking, and then with an affair, and finally with religious fanaticism, but nothing seems to be working, and it is driving him crazy.

Voices from the Street is the story of Hadley's descent into depression and madness, and his emergence out the other side.

Hermann Rorschach (11/8/1884-4/2/1922) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who followed the teachings of Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud. Hermann was fond of inkblots his entire life, so much so that his classmates called him “Klex,” a reference to klecksography, the art of making images out of inkblots. His education in art helped to spur the development of a set of inkblots that were used experimentally to measure various unconscious parts of the subject's personality.

A rare find!
Title: The Oriental Philanthropist, or True Republican by Henry Sherburne

A source we found states it’s the “first American novel to take place in China, and the second novel published in New Hampshire. Described as a didactic novel featuring Nytan, Prince of China, genies and fabulous legends.”

If you have more information on this book, or anything you’d like to share with the community about this novel, please do! This is only one of our most recent interesting and rare finds.
