Thanks to the generosity of donors, ACO Landscaping, Lakelands Overhead Door and Hydro One Beverages were able to take several truck loads of supplies to Hurricane Helene victims in Weaverville NC. Deliveries were divided between Piney Mountain Baptist Church and the Weaverville Community Center.

Because the interstate and main highways are clear, most people are unaware of the devastation just a few miles from the highway. Just 15 minutes from what seemed like normal life, there were folks who had lost their homes and many who still did not have electricity or clean water. So many lives have been lost.

We are committed to continuing our efforts to help our North Carolina neighbors. Many thanks to those of you who contributed to our first trip!

Another day to give!

When I was a child, my father was an editor at The McDowell News in Marion NC. We didn't have a lot of money, but we had a Press Pass. Our family took a lot of day trips to Ghost Town in Maggie Valley, Tweetsie Railroad between Blowing Rock and Boone, and Linville Caverns. Dad always had his camera, and I still have photos of some of the beautiful landscapes marred only by two or three scrawny kids with knobby knees. My brothers loved the Wild West themes, but I loved sitting on the wet rocks in the stream at Linville Caverns collecting the shiny black periwinkles that clung to the sides and the small smooth river rocks at my feet. In the Caverns, the stream had fish that were blind from spending their entire lives in the dark waters under the mountains. The severe beauty and solitude of these places made me feel like they were meant to stay that way, and the roar of the water from the falls sounded like a warning.

Even though those places were remote, they were surrounded by towns and cities with thriving populations that excelled in all areas and were filled with creative people who kept traditional arts alive and created new means of expression. A lot of what I remember has been swept away. The loss of life and livelihood has been devastating.
