Published: Jun 20, 2025 The good news is that you can now see the Nolichucky River sooner. Since my first thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2019, I’ve often thought about a cliff edge just above Erwin, Tenn., where the woods open to reveal the Nolichucky rushing from a gorge below. It is one o...

A microburst storm has caused severe local flooding and a possible rockslide along Interstate 40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. Reports indicate that the Appalachian Trail is impassable from approximately Davenport Gap to Brown Gap/Forest Service Road 148A (NOBO mile 239.4 to 251.9). The interstate is also closed in both directions. Hikers should avoid this section.

While the A.T. remains officially open through Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it is unclear if Davenport Gap is accessible due to damage. Northbound hikers should consider finding an alternative route from Newfound Gap (NOBO mile 208.0).

Heads up, A.T. hikers! 🚨 The Appalachian Trail is temporarily closed at the Georgia/North Carolina border between Blue Ridge Gap (NOBO mile 75) and Deep Gap (NOBO mile 85.2) due to a wildfire. Hikers should avoid this section and plan to shuttle around the closure.

Hoping the rain this weekend and next week helps the fire crews contain these fires. Please stay safe and avoid the closure areas.

The USDA Forest Service has closed the Shining Rock Designated Wilderness Area on the Pisgah National Forest in response to the ongoing Rattlesnake Branch Fire. All visitors in the area were evacuated yesterday evening.

This closure includes all National Forest land between US-276 and NC-215 north of the Blue Ridge Parkway (between mile markers 405 and 420).

Currently reaching approximately 400 to 500 acres with 0-percent containment as of 9 a.m. on March 27, the Rattlesnake Branch Fire in Haywood County spread into the Shining Rock Wildness yesterday afternoon, prompting the Forest Service to issue the closure order. The safety of both visitors and employees are the highest priorities for the Forest Service, so the public should stay out of this area while federal, state and local fire crews work to contain the blaze.

Out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of public safety, officials at DuPont State Recreational Forest are implementing several trail and road closures effective immediately. Due to active wildfires in the area, these closures are necessary. Broader closures may be implemented, if forest officials deem necessary.

The following forest trails and roads are closed until further notice:

πŸ‘‰ Reasonover Creek Trail
πŸ‘‰ Turkey K**b Trail
πŸ‘‰ Joanna Road
πŸ‘‰ Poplar Hill Loop
πŸ‘‰ Twin Oaks
πŸ‘‰ Table Rock Trail
πŸ‘‰ Three Lakes Trail
πŸ‘‰ Mine Mountain Trail
πŸ‘‰ Fawn Lake Loop
πŸ‘‰ Corn Mill Shoals
πŸ‘‰ Grassy Creek Trail
πŸ‘‰ Conservation Road
πŸ‘‰ Fawn Lake Road
πŸ‘‰ the Continental Divide Tract (area of DuPont State Recreational Forest near Green River Road and the S.C. border)
