How Sweat is Produced
Sweat is produced when our brains signal to our bodies that it's time to cool down. Our eccrine glands secrete fluids containing salts and other compounds, which then evaporate from our skin—this cooling-off process helps regulate our body temperature. This type of sweat does not contain any odors; however, when this sweat combines with the bacteria found on our skin, it can produce an unpleasant smell.
The Role of Bacteria in Producing Odor
While sweat itself does not contain any odors, bacteria on the surface of our skin feed off these secretions and break them down into smaller molecules known as fatty acids. These fatty acids are what give off an unpleasant aroma that is commonly referred to as body odor.
The cause of the smell can vary depending on the types of bacteria found on your skin—some people have more pungent-smelling bacteria than others, so certain individuals may be more prone to body odor than others.
What You Can Do To Eliminate That Unpleasant Smell
There are several steps you can take to reduce or even eliminate unpleasant body odor due to sweating. First, make sure you shower regularly using soap and warm water; this will help remove dead skin cells that harbor bacteria.
If you’re feeling especially sweaty or smelly after physical activity or being outside for long periods of time, consider using an antibacterial cleanser or natural deodorant spray (like those made with essential oils).
Additionally, wearing loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton will help keep air circulating around your body and reduce sweating throughout the day. Finally, drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins from your system which could be contributing to your body odor problem.
