Food Additives Worth Paying Attention To 👇
As a holistic RN, I encourage people to become label detectives.
Not because every ingredient is dangerous, but because many additives are markers of highly processed foods that move us further away from the foods humans have thrived on for generations.
🌿 Natural Flavors
This catch all term can represent dozens of flavoring compounds. Manufacturers are not required to disclose exactly what makes up the blend, leaving consumers with little transparency.
🌻 Sunflower Lecithin
Often used as an emulsifier to improve texture and shelf stability. While generally considered less problematic than soy lecithin, it is still a processed ingredient added to foods that would not naturally require it.
🫘 Soy Lecithin
Common in chocolate, protein powders, supplements, and packaged foods. Many people choose to limit soy based additives due to heavy processing and agricultural practices.
🛢️ Industrial Seed Oils
Canola, soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, and rice bran oils. These oils undergo significant processing and are often found throughout ultra processed foods.
🎨 Artificial Food Dyes
Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, and others. Added solely for appearance and offer no nutritional value.
🧪 Carrageenan
A thickener commonly found in dairy alternatives, protein drinks, and processed foods. Some individuals report digestive discomfort when consuming it.
🥛 Gums
Xanthan gum, guar gum, gellan gum, and similar additives are often used to improve texture and shelf life. Sensitive individuals may notice bloating or digestive upset.
🍬 Artificial Sweeteners
Sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and saccharin. These provide sweetness without calories but may influence cravings, appetite regulation, and gut health in some individuals.
🌽 High Fructose Corn Syrup
A concentrated sweetener commonly found in sodas, sauces, condiments, and packaged foods.
🧂 Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
Used to enhance flavor in many processed foods and restaurant products. Some individuals report sensitivity, including headaches or flushing.
🥫 Modified Food Starch
A highly processed ingredient used to thicken and stabilize foods. The original source is often unclear from the label.
🧼 Polysorbate 80
An emulsifier frequently found in ice cream, sauces, supplements, and packaged foods.
🧁 BHA, BHT, and TBHQ
Synthetic preservatives used to extend shelf life in many packaged snack foods and convenience products.
For me, the goal is not perfection. The goal is awareness. The more your food looks like food and the less it resembles a chemistry project, the easier it becomes to nourish the body the way nature intended. 🌿🥩🥚🍓
