WINTER WATER IS CRITICAL FOR HEALTHY TREES

ANOTHER REMINDER YOU NEED TO WATER YOUR TREES AND SHRUBS IN THE WINTER!!
We have had little moisture this winter your trees and shrubs ( and even perennials) will show struggle or even death come spring.

Dry soils can seriously damage root systems of perennial pants as well as trees and shrubs. The reason is because dry soil changes temperature quickly. Soil will also heave, expand and contract with changes and temperatures. The soil movement can physically damage or destroy roots.
Moist soils on the other hand change temperature more slowly. Soils kept moist during the winter are less susceptible to temperature changes and do not expand and contract. Keeping soil moist tends to save root systems from being damaged.
Evergreens are the most susceptible to winter drying because they don’t lose their foliage during these months. Also newly planted trees are more susceptible.

Dry winter winds can cause water loss through the leaves on Evergreens and the branches on deciduous trees to the point of causing significant limb, die back or the entire tree mortality.
AND WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF WIND THIS WINTER!!
Also watch for sunscald and frost cracks. Rapid freezing of warm bark tissues causes cells to rupture leading to vertical cracks or peeling bark and rust colored needles on evergreens. Particularly on the south to southwest sides of your tree.
Plant stress from winter desecration is more likely to succumb to disease and insect problems the following growing season.
Mulching can help it tends to insulate the ground and keep the soil at a relatively constant temperature. Mulching also helps in the summer to keep moisture in and weeds out.

Trees may appear healthy in the winter, but fail to leave out or show sudden needle drop, and branch died back in the spring as they attempt to resume growth without sufficient water stores.
In Wyoming it is recommended you water one to two times a month. Especially during drought!!

Watering fills open spaces and can heal seal cracks in the soil and minimize its damage caused by temperature swings.
WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND that you water in the winter especially when there is no snow cover when temperatures are above 40°. We encourage you to get out your hoses and water. Water enough to moisten the soil at 6 to 8 inches down. Remember to drain your hose before storing to prevent ice damage.

Winter in Wyoming can be very harsh. We spend too much time and money to make our yards beautiful. We need to care for them in the winter so we can enjoy them next summer.
