Not all cacao labeled “ceremonial” is created the same.

Over the years, the word has become increasingly common, but there’s still a lot of confusion about what actually makes cacao ceremonial.

For us, it begins long before the cup.

It starts with cacao grown in regenerative agroforestry systems that support healthy soils, biodiversity, and thriving rainforest ecosystems. It continues through direct relationships with smallholder farming communities and a commitment to sourcing cacao with integrity and reciprocity.

It’s also about the cacao itself. True ceremonial cacao is made from whole cacao beans with nothing added and nothing removed, preserving the naturally occurring cacao butter and beneficial compounds that make cacao so unique.

But perhaps the most important piece is how it’s received.

A moment of gratitude. An intention. A pause before the first sip.

Because ceremony is not something that happens to cacao. It’s a relationship we choose to enter with it.

Bananas might be ruining your cacao smoothie 🍌🍫

Most people add cacao to smoothies for the flavanols… but bananas contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, which can dramatically reduce flavanol bioavailability.

That means you may not actually be getting the cardiovascular and circulation benefits cacao is known for.

Try berries, avocado, dates, coconut, or cashew instead and let the cacao actually do its thing.

What are your favorite banana-free cacao smoothie recipes? Drop them below 👇

The benefits of a ritual practice isn’t always apparent during the ritual itself….

Sometimes the benefits are revealed hours later in a conversation that feels more present, a decision that feels more aligned, or a moment that is met with patience instead of urgency.

These small moments can seem insignificant on their own. Yet over time they shape how we move through our lives, how we relate to others, and how we respond when life feels demanding.

A cup of cacao, a walk in nature, a prayer of gratitude, a few quiet breaths. The practice itself may be simple, but the way it influences our relationship with the world can be profound.

Rituals change how we meet the world.

There’s a reason so many people say cacao brings them back to themselves.

It’s not just a feeling. Your heart, breath, and nervous system are deeply connected and cacao helps support the conditions where they can work together more harmoniously.

Most people don’t realize the heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends back to the heart. When we experience states like gratitude, calm, connection, or appreciation, the heart rhythm becomes smoother and more ordered. Researchers refer to this state as heart-brain coherence.

Breath deepens. Thoughts slow down. The body shifts out of stress reactivity and into a more regulated state.

One of the reasons ceremonial cacao can support this process is because of its unique chemistry.
Theobromine, cacao’s primary active compound, gently widens blood vessels and supports healthy circulation without heavily stimulating the nervous system.

Flavanols support nitric oxide production and vascular flexibility, helping blood flow more efficiently throughout the body and brain.

Cacao also naturally contains magnesium and compounds that support serotonin production, helping the body soften, settle, and regulate more easily.

Together, these compounds help create the internal conditions for coherence: a state where the heart, mind, breath, and nervous system begin working together instead of against each other.

It’s gentle, not forced. More like remembering what regulation feels like.

If you want to explore the science behind this more deeply, we wrote a full blog breaking down how ceremonial cacao supports heart-brain coherence in simple, grounded language.

What if gratitude is less about forcing positivity… and more about remembering your relationship to life itself?

One of the beautiful things about cacao ceremony is that it creates space to slow down enough to actually feel gratitude in the body, not just think about it in the mind.

When gratitude becomes embodied, something shifts.
The breath softens.
The nervous system settles.
The heart begins to open.

This is part of why cacao has traditionally been worked with in ceremony across generations. Not simply because of how it tastes or feels, but because it helps bring us back into relationship: with the Earth, with the people around us, and with the parts of ourselves we often lose contact with in the rush of modern life.

Cacao doesn’t ask for perfection or specific beliefs.
It simply invites presence.

A spoken gratitude.
A slower breath.
A moment of reverence before the first sip.

These small rituals can completely change how we experience both cacao and ourselves.

Save this ritual for the next time life feels rushed, heavy, or disconnected. Let it become a doorway back into presence, softness, and gratitude.

One of the reasons cacao has traditionally been grown beneath rainforest canopy is because cacao is deeply interconnected with the ecosystems around it.

Cacao evolved within biodiverse tropical forests, alongside fruit trees, hardwoods, pollinators, fungi, medicinal plants, and complex soil webs that all support the health of the land as a whole. The forest is not separate from the cacao. It is part of what shapes it.

This is one of the reasons regenerative agroforestry matters so much. Healthy canopy systems help protect soil moisture, regulate temperature, reduce erosion, create wildlife habitat, and support long term resilience for both the land and the farming communities who steward it.

The way cacao is grown directly impacts the future of tropical ecosystems.

Every cup begins within living networks of relationship extending from rainforest canopy to microbial soil life to the hands of smallholder farmers who care for these trees across generations.

One of the beautiful things about cacao ceremony is that it can help us remember this relationship more consciously. A spoken gratitude, a prayer, or offering a few drops of cacao back to the earth before drinking becomes a small act of reciprocity within a much larger web of life.

Golden milk cacao creates a cup that feels grounding, warming, and energizing without feeling overly intense ☕✨

The combination of ceremonial cacao, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and cayenne creates a rich, warming drink that supports circulation, digestion, and steady energy while still feeling deeply nourishing and balanced.

If you tend to run warmer in your constitution or live in a hotter climate, blending this recipe iced can help soften the intensity while still preserving the grounding and circulatory qualities of the drink.

Golden Milk Cacao Recipe:
• 20 to 25 discs of Oaxacan Spice cacao
• 2 tsp golden milk powder
• 8 oz oat milk or preferred plant milk
• Optional: honey or maple syrup to taste
• Optional iced preparation with ice cubes

Directions:
Warm oat milk gently to about 180°F without boiling. Add warmed oat milk, cacao discs, golden milk powder, and optional sweetener into a blender.

Blend until completely smooth and frothy.

If making iced, add ice cubes and blend until chilled and creamy 🤎

One of the reasons ceremonial cacao feels so different in the body is because much of the experience is connected to circulation, not just stimulation.

Researchers have spent years studying how cacao flavanols support nitric oxide pathways, blood vessel flexibility, vascular responsiveness, and blood flow throughout the body and brain.

This changes the feeling entirely. Instead of the sharp spike that often comes from caffeine which stimulates the central nervous system, ceremonial cacao can feel warming, grounding, emotionally open, and steady because oxygen and blood are moving differently through the system.

It’s also why minimally processed cacao matters. The way cacao is grown, fermented, roasted, and prepared directly impacts flavanol content and the overall experience in the cup.

Modern science is beginning to catch up to what traditional cultures have understood for generations: cacao does not just wake us up. It helps regulate blood flow, improves circulation, and moves energy.

The most unexpected part of drinking ceremonial cacao consistently isn’t the energy. It’s how you begin relating to yourself differently over time.

A daily cacao ritual can slowly become a place where you actually hear your body more clearly. You begin noticing what dysregulates your nervous system, what drains your energy, what helps you feel grounded, and how much your environment, pace, emotions, and habits truly affect you.

That awareness doesn’t usually happen from one cup. It happens through intention, presence, and creating small moments of consistency with yourself over time.

Somewhere along the way, the ritual stops being only about cacao and starts becoming about the relationship you’re building with your own body, emotions, and inner world.

What changes have you noticed from drinking cacao more consistently?
