Hey, Neighbors! Lately, I've been thinking about all the different ways people have found Bestside Blooms over the years.

Some of you have been here since I was growing and selling cut flowers. Others found me through the free flower stand, Kind Hearts Bloom, garden consulting, or my weekly newsletter.

From the outside, it might look like I've changed directions a few times.

But the more I've reflected on it, the more I've realized the thread has always been the same.

What started as a desire to grow more flowers slowly became an interest in something much bigger.

The flowers introduced me to neighbors I wouldn't have met otherwise. They sparked conversations, acts of kindness, and opportunities to connect with people I may have never spoken to. They made me curious about the relationship between gardens, community, and the places we call home.

Today, Bestside Blooms is where all of those interests come together.

I still help homeowners create meaningful outdoor spaces through garden consultations. I still spend an unreasonable amount of time thinking about plants.

But I'm also increasingly interested in the questions that gardens raise.

Why do certain places bring people together?

What makes a neighborhood feel connected?

How do small acts of care shape the places we live?

Through my writing, consulting, and community work, I've found myself exploring those questions more and more.

If you've been here for any part of the journey, thank you for sticking around.

I'm looking forward to sharing more of what I'm learning along the way.

If you'd like to follow the writing, you can find a link to my weekly essays in the comments.

Stay Kind,
Kristen

Recovery update: The flowers are doing better than I am 🌸

Last week I had my fifth surgery for endometriosis. I thought I had poison ivy. Turns out I stress activated shingles virus 🤦‍♀️

“When it rains, it pours”, right?

This garden tour was filmed while shuffling around the garden at 0.5 mph, checking on flowers, ignoring weeds, and reminding myself not everything needs to get done today.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned from chronic illness is that sometimes the only job is to let the storm pass.

PS. I’m fine. Future Kristen can deal with the weeds. Current Kristen is well taken care of (just very grumpy) and still has her sense of humor intact.

Buying plants for a cut flower garden? Always check the max height! I’m usually looking for at least 18 inches for a good stem length 💐

How to store your peony blooms for maximum enjoyment 🌸 Peony season is short, but oh so sweet! I love to stash blooms in the fridge so I have a fresh supply over 1-3 weeks.

When ready to use, give the stems a snip and set in water. They’ll open up in a few hours!

For years I couldn’t keep my hanging baskets alive all summer. They’d be bone dry hours of watering! I learned this trick from a professional greenhouse grower and haven’t had issues since👌

I think a lot of people assume they either need to fully tackle an invasive plant problem immediately - or do nothing at all.

But there’s a middle ground.

If you’re overwhelmed, simply cutting off the flowers before they set seed can help slow the spread while you figure out a longer-term plan.

And one important note: invasive plant material should go in the trash, not yard waste. Many species can continue spreading through compost piles or municipal yard waste systems.

Progress counts - even when it’s small.

Wildflower mixes sound easy, but they don’t always work the way folks hope 😬

Making your own native seed mix, that works with your specific growing conditions, will reward you with blooms that stand the test of time!
