They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but when they're custom-made and hand-sewn, it's hard not to.

My Jacques board shear, sitting bare without its blades, is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. The blades are off being sharpened, with a backup pair being made, ensuring my continuation as a bookbinder. It’s a stark reminder of how vital it is to maintain these tools and preserve their legacy as the craftsmen who care for them grow fewer.

At the same time, this pause has given me the chance to focus on cleaning and maintaining the shear itself. These tools deserve the same care and precision they bring to my craft.

While I’ve been busy making books, sometimes I need to acquire a few for myself. Just added these stunning 1784 tree calf editions of William Shenstone’s works to my personal collection! The moment I saw these volumes, they captivated me. The unique tree calf patterns on the binding are visually striking, and at just 5” tall by 3.5” wide, they are the cutest size.

These are some of the early examples of tree calf bindings, developed around 1775. Tree calf bindings, known for their distinctive tree-like mottled patterns, became popular in the late 18th century. As a bookbinder, I admire the craftsmanship on these greatly, every imperfection is perfection.

Yesterday from our island vantage in northwest Vermont, we witnessed the day turn to night as the moon eclipsed the sun. A reminder that even the brightest light can be eclipsed, only to shine again. This land, our home, offered us front row seats to the universe’s silent spectacle.

Found my slice of serenity right here in my office - my ‘sit and think’ spot. It’s amazing how a change of scene, even just to the floor, can shift perspectives. Here, with my leather journal, I sketch out ideas, dreams, and plans amidst the day’s rhythm. This isn’t my actual idea book pictured, that one is hidden from public eyes, a treasure trove of thoughts yet to be shared. Do you have a special spot where ideas flow freely?
