Monolith secret revealed.
It has be a while, I do confess for your Sunday Morning Read. There's been little activity however with all the COVID restrictions and closure. Our Canadian friends are just a stones throw away from our back door and we're looking forward to unveiling a whole new art world once the border is back open. Until then enjoy this "mysterious" artwork.

The mystery of the monolith has been solved. The world watched in wonder when a metal monolith was discovered in the southern Utah desert last month by wildlife officials who were counting sheep fr…

We're sorry we haven't posted a Sunday Morning read for quite some time. We've been busy settling into a new area. So happy however to share this story with you. This is the brain child of our good friends Aaron Blair and Jessica Blair who tried bringing life into the town of Visit Granby, CO. Here's what they're doing for the people of City of Sand City, CA. Lucky town to have them. Creative good can happen when you keep an open mind!
Pat Milbery

The canvas was seven walls spanning hundreds of feet in Sand City. And the mission was for teams of artists to convert blank space into open-air artwork that will last

Sunday Morning Read - Artcation

Want to know how to successfully draw thousands of people to your town? Stop in at the Visitor Center in Winthrop, WA and talk tourism. Winthrop was founded in the late 1800 by a gent from Boston. The town is located by the expansive Methow river and takes every opportunity to welcome recreators and travelers who flock to the area year round.
Shortly after the town was founded, author Owen Wister wrote his first Western novel, The Virginian, inspired in part by his honeymoon stay within the town.

Town committees truly understand the concept of destination getaway. Board walk shops are rustic in theme with meticulous, well enforced ordinances. In short, if you want to run a business or even live within the town, one must follow town rules. You'll find no blight issues within the town. No trash, no junked cars or appliances that have lived for years in someone's yard. Locals who want to live there actually want and understand the economy of tourists. Tourism is the number one priority and one must travel up the road for other services.

The shops are spectacular, filled with authentic, handmade, original craft and art. Only a few shops had items that could be found in another shop or online. We found handmade clothing, glass blown art, hand embroidered linens, handpainted footwear, gorgeous handcrafted hunting knives, lamps made out of local woods and stone. Many items had hefty price tags but that didn't seem to detour customers who appreciate originality and the unique. The Purple Sage was by far my favorite stop. Local artworks, colorful paintings reflecting modern day happenings and a quirky last supper full of owl figures. I hated to leave.

This town, however, did not escape the impact of COVID-19. Like the rest of the country they too missed out on sales revenue due to lockdown. There were a few shops that never reopened and a few empty retail buildings that are almost always full. Smaller food and beverage outfits along with hotel and lodges are scrambling and competing for workers. Many are past tired, taking on duties usually performed by staff. Overall, most have recouped early losses from staff cost reduction, but many we talked with are burnt out. One asked if she could come along with us on artcation!

If you're planning your next getaway I highly recommend putting Winthrop on your list!

Trailer hitched, fully loaded and we find ourselves surprised as we travel down the back roads of Montana and Idaho, Expansive territory of, well nothing really but wide open spaces. Dog bored, antelope everywhere but not much art in site as we continue on our way. A few country stations chatter in and out here and there but mainly it's the dull, roaring hum of the asphalt underneath us. Historic signs ahead - Yes! We stop. We've just found one of many crossing points of the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Lewis and Clark began their 2 year journey in the early 1800 under the direction of President Thomas Jefferson. Their journey started West of the Mississippi River and was thought to have been over eight thousand miles. They met both hostile and friendly native tribes and were eventually guided by the Nez Pearce tribe as well as Sacagawea, wife of a French-Canadian trapper.

Artcation suddenly took a turn back in time. Our travels quite frequently intersected the L&C and Nez Pearce trails. We encountered the Sacajawea Memorial Camp, found the Bluff where Clark's party reached the Salmon River and camped and other historical sites. We have the luxury of a pretty tricked out travel trailer with all the amenities. It's hard to imagine how Lewis and Clark made their expedition without today's modern technologies. They mapped the areas and in great detail recorded floral and fauna that was foreign to them. All without automobiles or computers.

As we continued our roadside journey we ran into many of the Nez Pearce trails. Aside from the narrow byways and a few small towns with old, failing buildings and structures not much else changed on some of the back roads we explored.

Many journeys still ahead!

The best lessons in life are those that you learn from. Looking forward to another "Artcation". This year we will be sharing our lessons learned from last year's mural festival with communities who are open to diversity in their communities as well as enhancing them through art. Very much looking forward to learning how other art communities are working through public exhibits and other challenges during the coronavirus pandemic. Hitting the road soon. Hope you will follow our journey.

Sunday Morning Read - When life hands you lemons...... In the past, galleries, maker's markets etc were successful because they were Amazon proof, meaning one of a kind items. Now everyone has turned to online shopping to find their own one of a kind items on Etsy, and similar pages. Even popular big box has realized the advantage of "bargain basement" marketing. If small communities are to survive in these strange, pandemic times, their leadership must get passed the status quo mentality and they need to employ and PAY innovative, forward thinking, minds. Check out this drive-in Van Gogh art exhibit.

The exhibit will feature some of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous works. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...
