I’ve shared a lot of the art I’ve bought for the shop on my feed and in my stories. BUT, here is the REAL reason I came to France: to learn how to paint the human portrait from life . Everything else beyond this was a bonus. I learned sooo much and I feel so proud of the work and progress I made! Did I nail every painting? Nope. But that’s not what learning is about!! Art isn’t for ego— it’s for exploration, learning, curiosity, feeding one’s soul. I feel so thankful to have gotten this opportunity to grow 😭

I first discovered 12 years ago from a tumblr account (yall remember tumblr?! 😂) because I’ve been obsessed with figure drawing for a very long time. Needless to say, my heart went ba-boom, ba-boom… I must go to there 😍

So when I tell yall studying at Escalier has been a long time dream of mine— I haven’t exaggerated in the least. And I’ve loved every minute of it! I graduated my first degree over 10 years ago and I love to tell people— learning is forever! There’s no degree and then you’re done. That’s the beauty of life and being human! We get to learn and learn and grow and grow! What a gift!

Buying art in France has been amazing and my eyes are bigger than the box of art I’m allotted to bring home 😂. But where there’s a will, there’s a way. I found a treasure trove of paintings from 1940s of period Abstract Expressionist original paintings by Pierre Montheillet that I traveled a great distance and jumped through many hoops to pick up (and to bring back!)

Okay… I guess was just kidding when I said that last post was my last post before taking off for my European adventures in May. I have one last Gravett painting for y’all until I return to work in June. And it’s a good one (but then again, I think they’re ALL good). This abstracted painting of a painting of a seated woman is the oldest painting by Gravett I’ve yet to bring to the shop and is likely the oldest of all of his pieces. My theory is this was painted early on during his college years while studying under Diebenkorn at UCLA in the mid-1960s. It’s quite different than all his other paintings in that it has a very different color palette, another reason I believe this to be one of his earlier works. Painted with oil on stretched canvas, it’s got great muted greens with pinks and yellows, great impasto paint application. There is some craquelure due to age but the paint is stable on the canvas. See last picture for details of craquelure. Presented in a custom stained poplar lath frame.

I’ve got one last furniture+art post for y’all before I head off to France in a couple weeks! A beautiful pair of vintage leather sling safari chairs with swivel backrests. The minimalist solid wood frames have been fully refinished by yours truly and are now in excellent condition. Leather slings were cut and stitched by my number #1 Thea, done in a natural veg tanned leather that will darken with use and time, forming a beautiful patina.

Also available is this fantastic and lovely abstract oil painting on stretched canvas with a handmade lath frame by Lance Woody Gravett, circa 1960s. Excellent color palette and paint application. Y’all know how I feel about Gravett so I’ll keep it simple— this is a great painting :)

Eep! The time has come upon us for me to make this instagram post announcing my imminent trip abroad to France to go study portrait painting in Paris. As I approach my upcoming departure, I’d like to announce that all art in the shop is 20% off until May 1st and all furniture is 10% off. Please send me a DM or feel free to purchase any item through my website (link in bio) using the promo code “Artforall” for discount on art or “gimmedatfurniture” for furniture discounts.

I will be leaving the country May 6th- June 17th and the shop will be “closed.” I use italicized because— I will mosdef be updating y’all from time to time during my studies and travels (gonna try to bring back any cool vintage art or frames I find while abroad) and I will still be checking my DMs because I’m a very small business and H&H is what allows me to pursue my dreams such as this upcoming venture (which is no small task to achieve and I couldn’t be able to do it without all of y’all who have put your trust in me to help make your house a home). All that being said, I am eternally grateful. Thank you everyone for all yalls support in helping make this trip possible for me. Life is for living, for dreaming and working hard to make those dreams happen ❤️

I’ve procured many a teak bed in my day but this sick vintage Scandinavian teak Queen platform bed by Laurits M. Larsen is a model yet to be seen here at H&H. Such a rad and unique frame! I mean, come on! Just look at it! Streamlined side panels, which allow for storage under the bed without the standard teak platform bed base, the geometric headboard with attached nightstands, and y’all saw me climb out of that trunk… it can fit a whole adult human body— though I would recommend storing your linens in it vs a human body. 😜 Great vintage condition save some minor flaws, most notably a few scratches to top of left nightstand, see 7th slide.

Have I told y’all about the splendor of the color green?! It sits smack dab in the middle of the visible light spectrum making it supremely easy for the human eye to perceive it with ease. “Green light waves focus directly on the retina, requiring less muscle adjustment from the eye and minimizing strain. It’s a combination of both calming blue and energizing yellow, thus bridging cool and warm colors together in a harmonious way— which has positive psychological impacts on the human brain.” ALSO! It reminds us of the beauty of nature, which this painting IS a painting of nature, a wonderfully abstracted one by Lance Woody Gravett.

Most of Gravett’s paintings were heavily inspired by nature, which was where his friends said he was happiest. He really brings his joy of painting and of nature together in his artwork and I just love that. Who doesn’t want to have a painting that’s a marriage of one’s greatest joys?! The deep emerald green stained, raw oversized canvas has energetic brushstrokes of chartreuse greens and olives with highlights of pinks, making it feel like a pleasant walk in the woods. As I mentioned in my last post, I adore paintings that are both calming and energizing and this painting is exactly that.

My favorite kind of art is the kind that makes you feel calm and energized at the same time. I’m inherently drawn to paintings that are both pretty but also make me feel something— the feeling of what it’s like to be human, to be alive amidst all this chaos of life and to find beauty in it all. This oil painting by Elizabeth Palay elicits all of those feelings for me. Palay once wrote in reference to her art, “My palette is the vocabulary of visual poetry,” adding that “each painting begins with an imagined color.”

This particular large scale painting from her “Downpour” series from the 1980s, clearly began and ended with the imagined color of pink but it’s so much more than that. It has greens, yellows, purples, blues, oranges. Strokes of colors that were applied to the canvas in a methodical way yet with so much energy. It’s hard to truly photograph this piece as it becomes electric in person through which the combination of colors create a vibrational sense from afar and the details are more pronounced from up close— making it a true delight to view from all angles. Painted in 1981 on stretched canvas and presented in a finished oak lath frame original to painting.

As a collector of ~things~, this colored pencil drawing on paper of a collection of things by Lance Woody Gravett, circa 1970s, makes my artist’s heart v v happy. Look at the energy of the way he illustrated his collection of things. So fun and full of vibrancy! And let me tell y’all… I searched high and low for this vintage frame that fits it perfectly. It is, in fact, the third frame I bought for this drawing… I did not rest until I found the *perfect* pairing.

My thoughts on flowers? Always a great idea. Fresh flowers or painted flowers, they bring such warmth and comfort into a home. There’s nothing here to *figure out* about this painting, it’s just lovely and sweet and pretty and I’m here for all of those things. This vintage oil painting on stretched canvas of a bouquet of flowers has such nice brush strokes and a great medley of colors. Signed illegibly in lower right hand corner. Dated 1988 in verso. Presented in original vintage frame.
