Essential Spring Battery Maintenance Checklist...

Safety First:
Wear safety glasses and gloves, as batteries contain sulfuric acid.

Visual Inspection:
Check for cracks in the casing, leaks, or bulging, which indicate a failed battery.

Clean Terminals & Case:
Remove corrosion using a wire brush and Battery Terminal Cleaner.

Check Electrolyte Levels:
For unsealed (flooded) batteries, check that water covers the plates. Top off with distilled water only, but do not overfill.

Check Voltage:
Use a voltmeter to check the charge. A healthy 12V battery should read approximately 12.6 volts to 12.8 volts.

Charge and Desulfate:
Use a smart charger or maintainer to bring the battery to full capacity. If the battery was sitting all winter, a charger with a "desulfation" mode can help break down sulfate buildup.

Secure Connections:
Reinstall the battery and tighten connections. Loose terminals cause poor starting and damage electrical components.

Protect Terminals:
Apply anti-corrosion grease or spray to the terminals.
