Since sharing my news, I’ve had a few friends say they’d like to start sewing also! So, while I’m getting things together and organized, I thought I’d share some helpful tips 😊
Today’s Tip: ALWAYS USE GOOD QUALITY FABRIC
Does it have to be a certain brand? Absolutely not.
Does it have to be the most expensive? Nope.
But, you want a good quality fabric that “performs” and stands the test of time. You wouldn’t want to invest time into a project for it to come apart - or worse stretch and get misshapen while you’re working on it. Working on quilting style projects, I only use 100% cotton. You want a fabric that is easily workable; it shouldn’t be so rigid it doesn’t flex or fold but it shouldn’t be so light that you can see through it 😂 Try different brands, see how you like them, if they’re easy to work with.
If you have a sewing machine, you can start with some older materials or clothes you might need to purge. I started sewing using scrap fabric that my mom had, just practicing. Stores that sell fabric (H0bby L0bby or some WaIm@rts) often have a remnant bin you can pick up some practice pieces pretty inexpensive.
Remember, your first goal is to get a feel for the machine, how much pressure you need for the foot pedal to control the speed, how the feed dogs grip and guide the fabric. Just practice until you feel like you’re in control 😊
And if you’re scratching your head saying “what are feed dogs”? 🤔 that’s a story for another day. Till next time friends! 👋
