Here is another book I read a few months ago. "The Coldest Winter" is about the Korean War.

There was lots of great information in this book and lots of great insights as to what happened and why.
I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about this period of our history.

Here is my current book read, "Dead Wake" by Erik Larson.

This one is about the final voyage of the Lusitania in May 1915 by a German U-Boat. I am just really getting into it but have learned a bit so far. Of particular interest to me was the life and personality of Captain Turner who was in charge of the Lusitania. I also found it very interesting about life aboard a U-Boat in WWII.

If you ever saw the movie, Das Boot, it gives you an idea that life on a submarine was not very glamorous.
The submarines were very smelly due to diesel fumes and body odor. Crews could not take a shower for weeks at sea and the boats were hot and stuffy inside.

I also learned that the crews of some U-Boat would sometimes scavenge for food from Merchant vessels before they sank them.

I did very much enjoy "Devil in the White City" about the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and learned a lot from that one as well.

I am now reading "Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson.

This one is about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the trials and tribulations of constructing it and then getting people to come when it was completed. While that is going on, there was also a serial killer named Holmes that was causing many young women and occasionally a few men to disappear.

This is a true story. I am now over halfway through and find the story fascinating. Who would have thought that putting together a World's Fair would be so difficult.

This is my second Book by Larson. The first was "Demon of Unrest" about events leading up to the Civil War. That was excellent.

I have been a fan of Brad Thor for a long time. I just finished reading these 2 books - "Rising Tiger" and "Dead Fall". Both were excellent and hard to put down

"Rising Tiger" covers tensions and low level conflict between India and China.

"Dead Fall" is about rescuing an American hostage aid worker kidnapped by a rogue Russian paramilitary group in the Ukraine known as the Ravens.

Former Navy Seal and special operative, Scot Harvard, has his work cut out for him in both of these. The action starts right away and goes almost non-stop throughout both books.

If you enjoy action and adventure combined with current events, I can definitely recommend Brad Thor.

I just finished "Treasure State" by C.J. Box. This is the final installment in the Cassie Dewell series so far.

In this book, Cassie a P.I. is on the trail of a con man that has bilked several older women out of vast sums of money. The trail takes her to Anaconda, Montana, which was once a huge copper smeltering town.

Also at the same time, she is attempting to locate the person who originated a treasure hunt involving thousands of people in the search.

This was a great book and I really enjoyed it. I do hope C. J. Box will continue on with the Cassie Dewell series.

In the meantime, I have started back up with the Joe Pickett series with his book "In Plain Sight" which I finally acquired through the Mrs.

I recently finished Badlands by C.J. Box. This was another great read featuring Cassie Dewell who is working for the Sheriff's Office in Grimstad, North Dakota.

An interesting fact is that my Grandmother on my Dad's side came from Grimstad, Norway. I still have relatives back there.

I enjoyed this one and just finished The Bitterroots in which Cassie is now a private investigator working for a defense lawyer.

I really enjoy history and like to explore history that I don't know too much about. As much as I have already learned there are always lots of new things to learn about history.

This last summer, I read " The Somme" by Robin Prior and Trevor Wilson. I admit that before reading this, I had heard of the Somme and knew a bit about it but decided to explore this battle a bit more.

The Somme offensive from July to November 1916 was a series of offensives by the British Army to gain ground and attrit the German Army on the Western Front.

In the big picture, these battles failed to achieve the original expectations and ended up costing the British over 400,000 casualties.

The book has a lot of maps showing the different British attacks, their goals, and the final dispositions of the sides. It shows the ultimate futility of war in general and this offensive specifically.

I learned quite a bit more from reading this and recommend it to anyone with an interest in WWI or history in general.
