Southworth Crafted

Southworth Crafted Woodworking, restorations and repurposing. I've had a fascination with construction and woodworking since building a gun cabinet in the 10th grade.

Although I have spent the last 27 years in the outdoor power equipment business, woodworking has always been my favorite hobby. In the past few years, I have returned to this and it's what I do for relaxation. Historic preservation, repurposing materials and building custom heirloom pieces has always been my passion. Meadow Creek Woodworking is set up as a division of my primary business, James So

uthworth & Company, LLC. Most of my work has been for family and friends, but I do some customer work as time allows. If you see something that speaks to you, send me a message and I will be glad to give you a price on doing it.

If anyone is in the market for a handmade porch swing I have one ready for its new home. I built this one as a prototype to save all of the measurements and patterns for future builds.

About 9 years ago I built the first version of this swing for Teri and it is still hanging up at our house. I tweaked that design a little and I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I have always liked the simple farmhouse style swings.

Here are the specs on it if you are in the market.

-built with some beautiful red oak. A lot of it is rift and quarter saw.

-the seat is 48” wide. I will post the overall measurements later

-this is not your cheap Amazon swing. It’s over built (like I build everything). All the boards are about 7/8” thick

-the entire swing is finished with Odie's Oil. I am getting away from about of the chemical finishes. This finish was hand rubbed into the whole swing. It soaks into the wood instead of just putting a “plastic” layer of polyurethane finish.

-the backrest is at a 15 degree angle so it should be pretty comfortable

-I also changed the seat design on this one to add a little more arch

Let me know if you want it. All you have to do is order a chain kit off of Amazon to hang it.

$450 and it’s yours!

Tweaking one of my old porch swing designs. I will hopefully get this finished up next week. Stay tuned 😃

A huge shoutout to the sherwinwilliams team on Hull Street in Midlothian!

After countless attempts to match the stain color for some cabinet replacement doors I was building, I finally admitted defeat. They told me to bring in one of the original cabinet door along with a piece of the new wood, and they would see what they could do.

A week later, they handed me a custom stain match that was about as close to perfect as you could possibly get. Their attention to detail and willingness to help saved me a ton of time and frustration.

I’ve been doing business with this store since they first opened, and they continue to deliver outstanding service every time. If you’re looking for knowledgeable people who genuinely care about getting the job done right, I can’t recommend them enough.

Friendly staff, incredible customer service, and people who truly know their craft. Thanks again!

A few years ago the guys at Meno Mill in Cumberland called saying they had some red oak fence boards they were milling that looked way too good to go on a fence. So I bought them. After drying for a few years I figured it was a good test run for the new planer. It did an amazing job. Some beautiful rift and quarter sawn boards in the mix as well. As a sidenote, I highly recommend this planer. I was literally talking to Teri on the phone with my AirPods while planing the boards. It’s crazy quiet! This was also the first test run of my makeshift dust collection 😂 . That worked like a charm as well. Now it’s time to make some newel posts and porch swings. Stay tuned 😃

I don’t care how many times you do this it never gets old. Feeding in a rough cut board and seeing this come out the backside is always pretty awesome! 😎
