If you've ever wondered which board games therapists actually use, this list is for you!

These are some of our favorite games to use in therapy sessions and the ones our clients ask to play again and again.

We often incorporate board games into sessions because they can help preschoolers practice so many important skills, including:

✔️ Taking turns
✔️ Waiting
✔️ Following directions
✔️ Problem-solving
✔️ Communication
✔️ Handling winning and losing

The best games don't just keep children entertained. They create opportunities for connection, learning, and meaningful interaction!

Did your child's favorite game make the list? Let us know in the comments!

Waiting can be hard for adults. Imagine how it feels for your child when they don't fully understand how long "a few minutes" really is.

Waiting is a developmental skill, not something children automatically know how to do.

Many meltdowns happen because:
• The wait feels unpredictable
• Your child doesn't know what comes next
• They don't have the tools to stay engaged
• The expectation is bigger than their current skill level

The good news? Waiting can be practiced and taught in small, everyday moments.

Start with short waits, explain what's happening, and celebrate success when you see it.

If waiting, transitions, or managing frustration are challenging for your child, support from speech therapy or ABA therapy can help build these skills through play, communication, and everyday routines. Reach out to learn more!

When children engage in pretend play, they're doing much more than having fun!

They're practicing new words, learning how conversations work, solving problems, and building the foundation for storytelling and social interaction.

The good news? You don't need elaborate toys or planned activities.

Following your child's interests and joining their play can create powerful opportunities for communication and connection every day.

If your child has difficulty using language during play, interacting with others, or developing pretend play skills, speech therapy can help support these important developmental milestones.

Many parents feel pressure to teach their child to "calm down on their own," but self-regulation doesn't appear overnight.

Your child first learns how to manage big feelings through co-regulation. When you remain calm, provide support, and help your child move through difficult moments, their brain is learning what regulation feels like.

Over time, those shared experiences become independent skills.

From both an ABA and speech therapy perspective, emotional regulation is a skill that develops through practice, support, communication, and connection. If big feelings are impacting daily routines at home, our ABA and speech therapy teams are here to help children build communication, coping, and regulation skills through play and connection.

If “no” and “stop” often turn into bigger reactions at home, the words we use in the moment can make a real difference.

Small language shifts can help your child understand expectations, stay more regulated, and move through tough moments with more support and less conflict.

Try swapping out “no” and “stop” for phrases that guide behavior and keep connection intact.

If these moments feel frequent or hard to manage, ABA therapy can help. We work with families to build simple, practical strategies that support behavior, communication, and regulation in everyday routines.

If your child is always moving, it can feel like they’re “all over the place.” For many children, movement is how they feel regulated, connected, and ready to learn.

These 3 toys are simple ways to support that need at home while still building communication and play skills:
✔️ Bubble machine for shared attention and requesting
✔️ Stepping stones for balance, sequencing, and following directions
✔️ Tunnel, tent, and ball pit for body awareness, pretend play, and regulation

When movement needs are supported, we often see increases in attention, language, and social interaction. If you’re looking for support building these skills at home, our team can help! Reach out to learn more!

Bedtime can bring out big emotions for many children and there’s a reason why! For young children, moving from one activity to another, especially from play to bedtime, can feel confusing, overwhelming, and out of their control. Their brains are still developing the ability to shift gears smoothly, especially when they’re tired at the end of the day.

That’s why bedtime often becomes the “perfect storm.” It combines multiple transitions, lower energy, separation from caregivers, and a loss of control all at once.

In those moments, tantrums aren’t about defiance. They’re a way of communicating that something feels too big to manage alone.

The good news is that small shifts can make a big difference: predictable routines, gentle warnings, and adding connection before separation can all help your child feel safer and more supported through the transition.

Therapy is often thought of as something focused only on your child’s goals, but what’s less often talked about is how much support it provides for your entire family.

When your child begins therapy, your family is also learning, adjusting, and finding new ways to navigate everyday routines together. The process is not just about skill building. It is about creating more understanding, consistency, and connection at home.

Progress does not happen in isolation. It happens in the small moments, how you respond, how routines are structured, and how supported your family feels along the way.

At AACT, therapy is designed to support both your child and your family system through collaborative, individualized care.

What is one thing you have learned about your child since starting therapy?

Tantrums are often a sign that your child is overwhelmed. Small, consistent routines at home can make a meaningful difference in supporting emotional regulation and reducing challenging moments throughout the day. Things like predictable transitions, built-in movement breaks, consistent daily routines, and intentional connection time all help children feel safer, more regulated, and more prepared for what comes next.

While no single strategy works for every child, supportive structure and skill-building can go a long way in helping families navigate big emotions with more confidence.

If your child is experiencing frequent or intense behavioral challenges, our ABA Therapy team is here to help. We work with families to identify the “why” behind behaviors and build practical, individualized strategies that support growth at home, school, and in the community.
