We recently dropped an article all about the finger follower issues that plague the 991.1 platform. Here's some questions we've been getting.
Can I inspect the followers without removing the engine?
Yes, but you can't inspect all of them. If any need to be replaced (which they likely will), the engine needs to be removed anyways.
How often do I need to inspect the followers?
E and F series motors will need to be checked more often than G motors. First inspection is to get an idea of where you're at and fix the damage. Afterwards, you can set a reasonable interval based on your driving. If it's a track car, no more than 5,000 miles between inspections. If your car only sees occasional high rpm blasts during street drives, 8000 miles could be sufficient. The important thing is to get a baseline.
How long does an inspection take?
Expect roughly 20 hours of labor for an engine out and back in inspection + whatever parts need to be replaced.
What do I do if my followers are worn?
Replace affected followers immediately. If your cams are worn, they need to be replaced as well. Proceed with recommended inspection intervals going forward. Share pictures of your followers and cams with us and we can help you along the way..
I want to get your .2 swap kit, will Dundon source an engine for me?
Unfortunately we can't source an engine for you but we can offer helpful resources and aid you in finding the right one for your car.
How much will the .2 swap kit cost from Dundon?
We don't have a final price on our swap kit yet. Keep an eye on our website and socials for further details :eyes:
Why doesn’t Dundon make a valvetrain upgrade for the E, F and G-series engines?
It would be very expensive to build the parts due to the precision required and the very low volumes. There are others claiming to make this type of product, and the pricing is close to $70k. That’s roughly two used 991.2 GT3 engines that already have the upgraded valvetrain. Adding a brand new valvetrain to a used engine with potential internal damage is also quite concerning.
Can you shift gears earlier or limit RPM to add life to the engine?
Yes, running at lower RPM’s will limit the potential for accelerated wear on these components.
Can you recommend a shop near me?
These are early days for independent shops learning to perform this inspection. The critical items are understanding the root issue, the symptoms that will be presented upon inspection, and evaluating the condition of the parts involved. It's also CRITICAL that the shops have the tools to perform the work. A competent technician experienced with these cars should have no trouble at all. If you want to reach out and share your location with us, we will share the resources that we have available.
