It’s been a quiet few months for OystHERS as I (Sadia Crosby - owner/farmer) finish up some off-farm projects. Usually the winter/spring is for mending gear, making plans, and prepping for the coming season. I was extra busy during this slower time, while completing my thesis and research for my Masters of Science in Entomology at the University of Maine, Orono.
What does entomology (study of insects) have to do with growing oysters?!?!
Well, like most folks who begin aquaculture pursuits, it wasn’t my first occupation. Before I started in 2019, I was working as an arborist for a tree care company in the Midcoast. During this time, coastal Maine began experiencing an outbreak of the non-native Browntail Moth (BTM, Euproctis chrysorroea). BTM causes damage to hardwood trees that provide services such as fruit crops, timber, habitat, and erosion control, to name a few. These pests can also threaten human health, causing severe rashes and respiratory problems from toxic hairs the caterpillars produce.
Use of broad-spectrum insecticides are common for controlling BTM, especially sprays that coat the leaves of trees that BTM feed on. This can lead to drift and runoff of these products into our water ways, and eventually the Gulf of Maine— the same water our oysters live and grow in. My research began in 2021 and works with testing the efficacy of biopesticides for BTM control, providing a targeted treatment that does not harm additional insect orders or invertebrates. Fewer broad-spectrum applications = cleaner water for our marine ecosystems.
I’ve learned so much and have made some incredible friends and colleagues during my time at UMO. Now, I’m excited to be back on the water this spring with a new perspective and appreciation for the living systems we utilize everyday. I’m also excited about some new projects I have been collaborating on and look forward to sharing some big news very very soon!!
Thank you to those of you who have supported and followed along on this adventure! Feeling very proud and loved during this time of growth and change!!
