🎉It's Maker Monday at The Winding Deerpath! Today we feature Mike Thielke, a woodworker who specializes in scroll saw work.

Mike says "After retiring, I was able to pursue my interest in working with wood. Moving to Washington Island both freed me and constricted what I could do with wood. It freed me because the Island, and our property, provide lots of free wood. 🌳🌲The majority of my recent scroll designs are made out of the wood I gather from our property. I'm a little restricted in what I can produce in wood because of the limitations of my shop...it's small...as much as I'd like to experiment with making furniture, I just don't have the room. 🪚I find scrolling relaxing and fun. It's rewarding when someone appreciates a design. I'm always looking for suggestions and am willing to explore ideas and techniques."

At The Winding Deerpath we carry many different products made by Mike. You'll find items in all price points suitable for gift-giving. Stop by and visit us at 316 Franklin Street in downtown Geneva just steps from Graham's Chocolates.

(Apologies to Mike for not having a better photo of him!)

🎉It's Wildlife Wednesday at The Winding Deerpath! Today we are featuring Dragonflies ~ infraorder Anisoptera
The dragonfly and its smaller cousin, the damselfly, belong to an ancient order of insects known as Odonata and have carried symbolic meaning for centuries. Most people love to have dragonflies in their gardens, if only because dragonflies love to eat mosquitoes. 🌾
Who hasn’t marveled at the aerial abilities of dragonflies as they glide effortlessly over sparkling streams, pristine ponds, and lovely lakes, plucking insects from the air with deadly precision?
Key Characteristics:
• Appearance: Large, multifaceted eyes (often with 30,000 lenses), a long abdomen, and two pairs of independently moving wings.
• Eyes: Have nearly 360-degree vision and the ability to see colors humans can’t.
• Hunting: Use bristly legs to form a basket to scoop prey out of the air; they are highly successful predators with a 97% success rate on hunts.
• Flight: Can fly up to 30-37 mph, hover, fly backward, and change direction instantly.
Life Cycle & Habitat:
• Habitat: Live near freshwater sources as their young are aquatic.
• Stages: undergo incomplete metamorphosis: egg, aquatic larva (nymph) and adult.
• Nymph Stage: Can last from one to four years, during which they molt up to 15 times and are voracious underwater predators.
• Adult Stage: Short, lasting from a few weeks to a few months, focused on reproduction and hunting.

🎉It's Maker Monday at The Winding Deerpath! This week we are featuring local artist Frank Mascenic. Frank paints abstracts, landscapes, still life, pop art, people and more. Frank was born in Chicago, and when he was seven years old, he was given a set of oil paints and he hasn't stopped painting since. His inspirations stem from Hudson River School and Impressionist art as well as Jackson Pollack and Ed Dieben Korn.

🎨Frank's palette of colors appease the eye or awakens a mood. His approach to the surface is to add as much richness as possible, and then subtract until reaching the right amount of nuance. Frank considers himself to be a colorist who never stops learning.

⭐Frank Mascenic received his Associates Degree in commercial art at Triton College. He was then drafted into the Army and was given a military occupation as an illustrator during the Vietnam War from 1970-1972.
After returning to school, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Northern Illinois University.

🖌Frank finds balance by continuing to pursue the creative process.
Over time Frank has exhibited tied in various art shows and has received local and national awards for his life-long passion.

📍You can see Frank's work at The Winding Deerpath in downtown Geneva at 316 Franklin Street just steps from Graham's Chocolates.

Wonders of Nature Event Recap 🌿✨
Our first-ever Wonders of Nature event was a huge success! Last Tuesday, Alex Ruedel, a naturalist from Peck Farm Park, wowed us with a fascinating presentation about moose. Attendees got an up-close look at real moose antlers and skulls, and the kids even had a chance to hold these amazing artifacts! 🦌

This program was FREE, and because it was such a hit, we're bringing it back in July! Stay tuned for the announcement right here on our social media.

To add to the fun, we hosted a craft class on Wednesday morning where kids painted their own moose cutouts. 🎨

Next week, don't miss out on our Butterflies and Insects presentation! 🦋🐞 Join Alex on Tuesday night from 5:30-6:30 PM, and enjoy a watercolor painting class with Paula on Wednesday morning.

⭐For more information, check out last week's posts or give us a call at 630-362-3647. Keep following us for all the details! 📞✨
