🎉It's Wildlife Wednesday at The Winding Deerpath! This week we are focusing on the Ruby-throated Hummingbird ~ Archilochus colubris.

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only breeding hummingbird in eastern North America. These small, vibrant birds are known for their striking emerald or golden-green backs and distinctive ruby-red throats in males. They are agile fliers, often seen darting between flowers and feeders in search of nectar.

Did you know?
🌺 The hum of a hummingbird is made by the bird’s rapid wing beats.
🌺 It beats its wings about 53 times a second.
🌺 The extremely short legs of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird prevent it from
walking or hopping.
🌺 Breeds across eastern North America, from Florida to Canada.
🌺 Migrates to Central America and Mexico for the winter.
🌺 Primarily feeds on nectar from flowers and sugar water from feeders.
🌺 Known for aggressive territorial behavior, especially males during breeding
season.
🌺 Fly straight and fast but can stop instantly, hover, and adjust their position up,
down, or backwards with exquisite control.

💡You can attract Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to your backyard by setting up
hummingbird feeders or by planting tubular flowers, preferably orange or red. Make
sugar water mixtures with about one-quarter cup of sugar per cup of water. Food
coloring is unnecessary; white cane sugar is the best choice. Change the water before it grows cloudy or discolored and remember that during hot weather, sugar water ferments rapidly to produce toxic alcohol.

🎉It's Wildlife Wednesday at The Winding Deerpath! Today we are discussing bumblebees-Bombus.
🐝 Did you know there are 46 species of bumblebees in North America, with 18 of them buzzing around in Illinois? These large, furry bees are known for their unique color patterns and a signature loud hum! They typically nest underground in small colonies of 50-150 and are generally peaceful. While female bumblebees can sting, they’ll only do it if they feel seriously threatened. 🌼

Bumblebees are superheroes for our environment, playing a crucial role in pollinating both crops and wildflowers, which helps support biodiversity and food production. Unfortunately, their numbers are declining due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change, making it more important than ever to protect these pollinators! 🌍❤️

Here's a quick look at their fascinating life cycle:
1️⃣ Emergence: The queen awakens from hibernation to start a new colony. She’s hungry and depends on early flowers for food to develop her ovaries. We are currently in this stage.
2️⃣ Colony Growth: Worker bees (females) are produced, and they begin foraging to help the colony thrive.
3️⃣ New Generations: The queen lays unfertilized eggs (males), and worker larvae develop into new queens.
4️⃣ Cycle Ends: After mating, the colony disintegrates. The old queen, workers, and males die, while new queens hibernate, capable of surviving temporary flooding!

Fun fact: Bumblebees don’t store food for winter; the little they do store supports larvae and the egg-laying queen! 🐝✨

Let’s do our part to ensure their survival. Keep an eye out for these amazing creatures and support local habitats! 🌻
