You'll *probably* be the only one in Geneva with one of these. This hand-painted Geneva-themed basket purse/handbag by Caro-Nan (signed on the underside of the lid) dates to 1967, as evidenced by the 1967 Lincoln cent glued to the top of the purse. That's often how Caro-Nan 'dated' their basket purses. Carolyn McDaniel and Nancy Steele were the founders of this company, which made high-quality "New England" style basket handbags with handles and lids. This purse has several familiar Geneva landmarks - the Kane County Courthouse, The Geneva Historical Society (now the History Museum), St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and the State Bank of Geneva. Also Country Kitchen, Marian Michaels Children's Shop, and Village Vogue (I think that one went out of business in the '70s!). The purse has a quilted fabric lining, and is in pretty good shape for being older than me. Porch pickup in Geneva. $75 obo.

These "Princess" ice skates date to about 1961-1962, were owned by one family from that time until the time that I bought them (this summer). They have been safely stored away away from heat and light for over 60 years! They are "Canadian Flyer" ice skates, women's size 7, and are in "Figureice Blue" (otherwise known as just "ice blue"). They were made by Brunswick Sports, and have a grey fur lining. Both laces are intact, and the blue leather looks great! After a good polish, they'd look great hanging up in a cabin, or in a 'sports' room. Or, if you're a size 7, take them out on the rink and get them back into use! Porch pickup in Geneva. They come with their original box, too! I'm attaching a snip from a 1962 ad featuring these skates for reference. $110 obo. Cross-posted.

This is an original vintage "Speculum" yearbook from East Aurora High School (or East High School in Aurora, if you prefer) which dates to 1946. This copy is complete, and does have inscriptions. It is NOT an ex-library copy! The only other '46 Speculum for sale is currently listed for $80. This issue is interesting because all the juniors (class of 1947) are also pictured and named (they are in groups). The seniors are pictured individually. Some foxing on the title page, but overall a good copy. Yes, it's available if it's still listed. I won't respond to "is it available?" queries. Superintendent was K. D. Waldo at this time, and O. V. Walters was Principal. Lots of recognizable local names. Local pickup in Geneva. Cross-posted.

Any issues of the Geneva (Kane County, IL) High School yearbook from the 1960s are NOT easy to find. This is the 1968-1969 copy of the "Viking" which is 152 pages long. Not only does this yearbook have all of the graduating seniors, there are also photos of members of the classes of 1970, 1971, and 1972, so if your father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, great-aunt or uncle, etc. were at GHS in the late '60s or early '70s, they are probably in here somewhere! This copy is NOT ex-library, but it does contain inscriptions. The yearbook was formerly called the "Gecohi." All the usual yearbook-related topics (sports, clubs, homecoming, faculty, etc.) are covered. There are also two pages of local businesses, which all had a part in sponsoring the yearbook.

Here are the last names of the graduating seniors: ABRAMSON; ABTS; ADAMS; AINSWORTH; ALBERTSON; BABIAN; BACKEY; BARKER (x2); BATES; BEEHLER; BENSON; BERCHEM; BIERMAN; BIHLER; BILLHARDT; BLANTON; BLAUFUSS; BOSS; BRINKMEYER; BRUER; BURGESON; BURGESS; BUTLER; CARLSON (x2); CATES; CATHEY; CHALBERG; CLARK; CLAUTER; CLEGG; COURY; COX; CROSS (x2); DAZZO; DIVINE; DOLAN; DUGGINS; EDER; ELLMAKER; ENGQUIST; FAIR; FAIRBANK; FERGUSON (x2); FOLEY; FORNI; FRASER; FREEMAN; GATES; GIESE; GOSSMAN; GRIMM; GROSSKLAG; GROW; HALLAHAN; HASCALL; HELM; HETZLER; HOCKING; HOLMBERG; HOUDEK; IBSEN; INGOLD; JACOBSEN; JAEGER (x2); JARVIS; JOERG; JOHANSEN; JOHANSON; JOHNSON (x5); KASTOLL; KINST; KREHBIEL; KUIPERS; LARSON; IEISENDAHL; LINDAHL (x2); LINDGREN; LOWE; McCONNAUGHAY; McCRACKEN; McDONALD; McDOWELL; McELROY; MADILL; MALLER; MANNY; MEHELICH; MEISNER; MILEWSKI; MILLER; NARKIEWICZ; NARNEY; NEILL; NELSON (x2); NEPSTAD; NERI (x2); NETTLEINGHAM; NEWLAND; NEWTON; NOVELL; NUCKLES; OSBORNE; OTTO; PECK; PETERSON (x3); PHELPS; PHILLIPS; PITZ (x2); RADECKY; REDD; RICHARDSON; ROAKE; ROCKFELLOW; RODRIGUEZ; ROTHSTEIN; SCHAEFFER; SCHURRUBLE; SCHROCK; SCHWARTZ (x2); SEANOR; SHELDON; SHULS; SIMPSON; SINGER; SMITH; SNYDER; SORENSEN; SPETLY; SPRINGER; STALEY; STEWART; TEBBENS; THOMAS; TOROK; TURBYFILL; TURNBAUGH; VAN THOURNOUT; WAKEMAN; WARBERG; WHITE; and WIGSTONE.

This is a fairly scarce Geneva item, and currently I am not seeing any other copies for sale anywhere with an online presence. SOLD!! [original post follows:] This is an original 1951 printing of "Community Fare Cookbook: A Collection of Choice and Unusual Recipes" by the Woman's Auxiliary of Community Hospital right here in Geneva, Kane County, Illinois. Perhaps your mother, aunt, or grandmother was a contributor? Lots of recipes for soups, casseroles, meats, breads, cookies, preserves, appetizers, drinks, and much more. Make the same dishes your Geneva predecessors did in the '50s! $12, porch pickup in Geneva.

SOLD!! [original post follows:] This is a complete original 1877 printing of "Robinson's Progressive Practical Arithmetic; Containing The Theory of Numbers, in Connection with Concise Analytic and Synthetic Methods of Solution, and Designed as a Complete Text-Book on this Science, for Common Schools and Academies" by Daniel W. Fish. It was published by Ivison, Blakeman & Company of New York and Chicago. Perhaps more interesting, though, are the 1880s and 1890s inscriptions linked to Sugar Grove. They are in pencil, red colored pencil, purple ink, and brown ink, mainly, and are from two siblings, Zenobia Carlson (b. 1872) and her brother Robert E. Carlson (b. 1878) both of whom used this particular book. Really fun items pasted onto and drawn on the rear endpapers! Porch pickup in Geneva. A great piece of Kane County history! $28 obo.

SOLD!! [original post follows:] Since there were only three graduates of the Sugar Grove School in June 1894, I can virtually guarantee that you won't be able to find another one of these anytime soon, if ever! This is an original antique piece of local Kane County history - the "Commencement Exercises of the Sugar Grove School" from Friday, 1 June 1894. The program was printed by Copeland & Phillips of Aurora. The graduates that year were Alice Josephine Like (born in Big Rock on 18 January 1879 - she married Edward Thomas Morris in 1897), Francis Eugene Heacox, and Vernerd Rodney McDole (he was born in Aurora on 15 April 1877, and was later a machinist and a welder). Township Trustees were J. D. Evans, W. Keck, and R. Finley. The School Board consisted of Evan Owens, M. H. Snow, and A. L. Lye. Lots of other names in the program - the Prayer was by Rev. J. C. Stoughton, for example, and an essay was by Ina G. Bolster. There were probably only a few dozen of these printed, and it's unlikely that more than a few copies survive. Beautiful blind-embossed image of an owl, book, and lamp on the cover. I've protected the item in a clear acid-free sleeve. $25 obo. Porch pickup in Geneva.

SOLD!! [original post follows:] Original antique copies of this 1908 book are very hard to find (take a look at Bookfinder and you will see what I mean - NONE are now for sale on any online platform, including AbeBooks, Biblio, eBay, Alibris, etc.). Luckily for fans of Kane County (IL) history, I have TWO copies of volume 1 of "History of Kane County, Illinois" by Rudolph Waite Joslyn and Frank W. Joslyn. Both are well-worn. The books are each over 860 pages long, and are well-illustrated (especially with views/buildings of Aurora and Elgin, but with several of St. Charles and Geneva as well as other cities and towns). The books were published in Chicago by the Pioneer Publishing Company. The copy on the right, with the partially missing spine, is $80. The nicer copy is $110, obo. Great history of the county from its original permanent settlement in the 1830s through the decade of the 1900s.

There are pages on the history of the following cities, towns, and townships: Aurora; Elgin; Geneva; Geneva Township; Batavia; Batavia Township; St. Charles; South Elgin; Dundee; Carpentersville; Dundee Township; Elburn; Blackberry Township; Plato Township; Kaneville Township; Campton Township; Big Rock Township; Burlington Township; Hampshire Township; Sugar Grove Township; Virgil Township; Rutland Township.

Also chapters on: Ancestors of the Pioneers; How the Pioneers Came; What the Pioneers Found; Beginnings Along the Fox River; Bench & Bar; The Press; The Medical Profession; Geology; Internal Improvements; Wars; Politics; Religion; Education; the Underground Railroad; Lists of Early Families; and more. Porch pickup in Geneva.

I'm selling a set of three clear glass antique (1920s-30s) Hazel-Atlas pint mason jars. All have wire bails, intact glass tops. Two marked with embossed 'ATLAS E-Z SEAL' (with "dropped A"), the third unmarked, but does have the "H-over-A" logo on the base (present on all three). Perfect for display in a kitchen, or use for dry ingredients (like coffee beans, flour, herbs...), candles, vases, canning, etc. One has the "K" on the base, indicating its manufacture at the Kearns-Gorsuch Plant in Zanesville, Ohio. Another has the "M" factory code. The third has the catalog number 5802 on the base. Asking $40 for the set, obo. Porch pickup in Geneva.

This complete set of ten volumes runs to nearly 9000 pages, and contains absolutely everything you've always wanted to know about pre-1960 music! This is an excellent vintage set, the Fifth Edition, dating to between 1954-1962, of "Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians." The series was edited by Eric Blom, and was published by St. Martin's Press of New York. This includes the Supplement (volume X) published in 1961, and the whole series contains hundreds and hundreds of images. A perfect graduation gift for a music student, a music teacher, or someone going on to study music. A great and nice-looking reference set in blue cloth-covered boards. Local pickup in Geneva, or I can meet you in St. Charles, Batavia, West Chicago, Winfield, or Wheaton. Asking $110 for the set, obo. Many sets in similar condition go for twice as much. Cross-posted.

I'm selling my large and rather scarce framed antique 1926 aquatint by Sidney Z. Lucas showing a pre-Fire (1865 view of) the Old Post Office and Custom House, Chicago, northwest corner of Dearborn & Monroe. The building was completed in 1860 (contract signed 1855), and was destroyed by the 1871 Fire. Part of the old Reynolds Block is seen to the north of the Post Office, and the Lombard Block may be seen to the west. The Custom House building sat on what is now the site of the plaza in front of Chase Tower. A great piece of Chicago history, and in nice condition for its age. Would look great in any room! Frame measures 26.5" x 31.5" in size. An identical copy is currently available from New World Cartographic (for $350 plus shipping). They add that "This print was published by Sidney Z. Lucas whom attained the rights from A. Ackermann & Son, a British publisher, with offices in Paris, Chicago and New York. Ackerman & Son were the primary print publishers for Raoul Varin (1865 - 1943) a French watercolorist who became well known around the turn of the 20th century. He made just over 30 different views of Chicago as it would have looked in the years before and after the Chicago Fire. This print is engraved in aquatint, which is an intaglio printmaking technique that produces a tone rather than lines, giving it a visual effect resembling a watercolor. It is produced from a copper plate that is etched with nitric acid." Paper is in good condition. Margins very good. Asking $275 obo. My copy is ready to hang. Pickup in Geneva, or I can meet you in Wheaton or Carol Stream, if you're coming from Chicago. PM me with questions - you won't find many like it!

SOLD!! [original post follows:] Yes, the spine is missing and the binding is pretty poor (to put it mildly), but you simply can't find original copies of this amazing 1888 Kane County history like you could years ago. There are thought to be fewer than 800 original copies of this title extant. And if you can somehow manage to find a nice copy, it will cost you a two or three hundred dollars, at least. This rare book, "Biographical and Historical Record of Kane County, Illinois" (also called the "Commemorative Biographical & Historical Record") is complete, and runs to 1115 pages! Still has both original brown leather-covered beveled boards, with stamped gilt titling; also gilt page edges, and all of the wonderful portraits of the area's earliest settlers. The book was written just 50-some years after the initial permanent (European) settlement of the county - Batavia of course was first, by a few months anyway - and locals will no doubt recognize the names of many of those included in this book. Settlers from all Kane County cities and townships (Hampshire, Rutland, Dundee, Burlington, Plato, Elgin, Virgil, Campton, St. Charles, Kaneville, Blackberry, Geneva, Batavia, Big Rock, Sugar Grove, and Aurora Townships) are represented. A steal at $99, in my opinion. Local pickup in Geneva, or I can meet you in Batavia or St. Charles. Cross-posted.

SOLD!! [original post follows:] This is an original antique book from 1899. It was published by the Government Printing Office in Washington, DC, and the authors of the many books in this series (including this one) are considered to be The Hon Elihu Root, Secretary of War (for William McKinley); Brigadier General Fred C. Ainsworth (Chief of the Record & Pension Office, War Department) and Joseph W. Kirkley. This is Series III, volume III, and the actual book title is "The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies." All of the series together ran to over 120 volumes.

This volume contains "Correspondence, Orders, etc. from January 1, 1863, to December 31, 1863" and runs to over 1250 pages! Lots of documents issued by President Lincoln, Secretary of State William H. Seward, Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, and any other Civil War-era figure you can imagine! Includes an extensive index.

A bargain (I think) at $40. But, if I have no interest in a few days, I'll take a reasonable offer. Both hinges are split, plus discoloration to cover, spine sunning, normal wear for a 125-year-old book. Porch pickup in Geneva. Cross-posted.

This is a nice original piece of local history, and of course still can be used today. It would be a perfect gift for an Aurora resident, or for someone who likes to cook! This vintage spiral-bound cookbook dates to 1954, and has scores of local ads from local Aurora (Kane County, IL) businesses. It's the "Parent-Teacher League Cook Book" created by the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran School. The school was organized in December 1901 by Rev. C. J. Fricke, and the school building was built between 1914-1917. The book is broken into sections, staring with "Relishes/Pickles/Appetizers" then "Soups/Salads/Beverages," "Meat/Fish/Poultry," "Rolls/Pies/Pastries" etc. Porch pickup in Geneva, or I can meet you in St. Charles or Batavia. $22 obo. Cross-posted.

SOLD!!!! [original post follows:] Did you have relatives in Batavia back in the 1940s? Or are you just interested in local history? This is an original (and scarce) vintage copy of "Echo" the Batavia (IL) High School yearbook, from 1948. This is a nice piece of Kane County history, and is 60 pages long. There are two pages of local advertisements. No inscriptions in this copy. It is a former library copy, and has a 'withdrawn' stamp on the front flyleaf. Evidence of old stickers on the spine, and one still on the rear pastedown. Some pencil checkmarks and x's near names. The graduates from this year (mainly born c. 1930) are:

ALSUP, ANDERSON (x4), BARTELLS, BENSON (x2), BERGESON (x2), BRADING, BURI, BUTCHER, CARLSON, CAVENDER, CONN, CURNOCK, DAVEY, DIERKING, DIETZ, DUNLOP, EUDEIKIS, FILLMORE, HALLIN, HANLON, HARD, HITCHINGS, HOLM, HONHOLT, HOPPE, ISSEL, JACKSON, JAMES, JOHNSON (x4), KARAS, KIDSTON, KUNSTMAN, LAMB, LANGEFELD, LARSON, LEKANDER, LINDGREN, LITTLEJOHN, LUNDBERG, MASON, MAYTUM, McCONNAUGHAY (x2), McNALLY, MILLETT, OSLUND, PALMER, PETERSEN, PETERSON, PINZINO, RECKINGER, SAYER, SCHIEDLER, SCHRAUTH, SHUMWAY, SODERHOLM, STENMAN, STRAN, THEIS, THELANDER, THOMAS, TINCKNELL, WALBERT, WASILAS, WEAVER, WHIPPLE, WHITE, WILLIAMS, WOLCOTT, YOUNG.

The juniors are also pictured (in groups) as are the sophomores and freshmen. Look for the names of your relatives, or those of your friends and old neighbors' parents and grandparents!

Asking $45 obo. Porch pickup is available in Geneva. Or I can meet you in Batavia or St. Charles. Cross-posted.

This is a set of two antique medicine (or apothecary) bottles, which probably date to between 1900-1925. The larger one was made by the Herb Juice Medicine Company - this is a Miller's Antiseptic Oil bottle, and stands 6 1/2" tall. It's a clear bottle, and would make a perfect display piece for a window which gets a lot of light! It has a generally rectangular shape, with slightly recessed 'panels' on all four sides. The lettering is embossed on the two narrower sides. The seams are detectable. The second bottle is 5" tall, and is a similar shape to the first. Both sides read "Sauer's Extracts." The bottles would benefit from a thorough cleaning. They would look great with some dried flowers! I didn't have any, but one photo shows a Lego flower, to give you an idea! Porch pickup in Geneva. Cross-posted. $20 for both, obo.

This antique medicine (or "chemist's") bottle was made by Allied Laboratories, and stands 8" tall. It's dark amber in color, and would make a perfect display piece for a window which gets a lot of light! It has a very unusual design, with one half rounded and the other half divided into a half-octagonal shape. The lettering is embossed, as are the graduated measurements on the other side. It reads from 0 to 500 cc (cubic centimeters, I assume). The top is flat, with the seam just barely detectable. The bottle is 3" in diameter, and would benefit from a thorough cleaning. It can also be called an apothecary bottle. It probably dates to the 1900s or 1910s, and would look great with some dried flowers! Porch pickup in Geneva. Cross-posted. $14 obo.

This is a great piece of local Kane County history - an original vintage copy of the 1955 Saints' "Halo" yearbook from St. Charles High School. A great navy blue and white cover, with wonderful mid-50s images throughout. The book is 108 pages long, and is free from annotations and inscriptions. 1950s St. Charles yearbooks are harder and harder to find, especially in great condition like this one. Perhaps your parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles or old neighbors went to school in St. Charles back in the '50s? SOLD!! This is a slightly rough but complete original antique printing of "Past and Present of Kane County, Illinois" from 1878. It would be a perfect gift for anyone interested in local history. This is the first published history of Kane County, and contains a very nice hand-colored map of the county, and many images of the early settlers. All towns, villages, townships, and cities are covered. Plenty of material on Elgin, Aurora, Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia, Sugar Grove, Big Rock, Kaneville, Blackberry, Virgil, Carpentersville, Plato Township, Hampshire, Rutland, Campton Township, Dundee, etc. This particular copy was owned by an early settler of Aurora, Joy Tarble (1806-1889), who came to area in 1846. The book is 824 pages long. The county had only been settled for 46 years when this book was written, and some of the first settlers were still alive. VERY hard to find anymore (it was never easy). Rear board detached, spine peeling, irregular page blocks, bumped corners, etc. Still, there are only a few hundred of these originals remaining. I have two. Asking $100 obo. Porch pickup in Geneva, or I can meet you in St. Charles or Batavia. Cross-posted.
