Well, friends, another year has passed, and it's time for our once a year Facebook post about the State Street Market. This year is different though, and I want to share with you all that we're actually not going to be setting up a booth on Saturday.
Most people know this, but not everyone is aware that the first Saturday in October is technically the only day of the year where our little business is open to the public. We have full time jobs working for the great company of John Deere, we have 3 boys in elementary school that need a lot of our energy outside of work, oh yeah--and we also have a couple small farms to take care of.
Rural Route has always just been a fun thing we do on the side. It doesn't generate any income for our family, because the profit always goes to donations to ag related charities (like FFA, 4H, Pheasants Forever for example) or to purchase equipment to be able to print shirts better for you.
We have a lot of mixed feelings about this decision, mainly because it's always our favorite day of the year and it fills us with so much appreciation and pride for our customers and this amazing community. But the reality is this year has been really hard for us personally, and we just couldn't make space in our lives the past few months to get prepared for it.
It takes months of preparation little by little at night and on weekends to get everything ready for the market since we have so little free time. It's always been worth it to make those sacrifices in the past, but this year we needed to take a pause to be able to fully focus on our family and enjoying the end of summer and this beautiful fall season.
There are two big factors that led to make being at the market really hard for us this year. The first is that my older brother, Jeff, passed away from complications of Type 1 Diabetes very unexpectedly in February. Nothing can prepare you for losing a sibling, and I didn't fire up the printing presses for 4 months after that.
To add to the struggle of grieving, we lost our machine shed to a tornado on April 4th. This pales in comparison, but created another struggle for us. That's where we store all of our displays and things we use for State Street Market. The contents of the building were mostly fine thankfully, but everything has been stored in shipping containers since May. We still haven't been able to unload most of it and put it away, and I couldn't even tell you where most of the items are!
Based on those two events, it was pretty easy for us to decide to take a year off; instead we have been very focused on having fun with family, and enjoying the outdoors in our free time.
Although we will miss having our booth on Saturday, we know it was the right decision for us. One "no" resulted in many other "yeses" for our family.
And you know I'll still be there Saturday, taking my time checking out every booth which I haven't been able to do for the past five years!
So please share the love and support you usually show to us to other small business owners this weekend.
