Did you know that repentance is a key theme of Holy Week? Here are some interesting facts about the importance of repentance in the Christian faith:

1. The word "repentance" comes from the Greek word "metanoia," which means a change of mind or heart. It involves a turning away from sin and a turning toward God.

2. Repentance is not just about feeling sorry for our sins - it also involves a commitment to change our behavior and live according to God's will.

3. The Sacrament of Confession, also known as Reconciliation or Penance, is an important practice of repentance in the Catholic Church. Through this Sacrament, we confess our sins to a priest and receive absolution, or forgiveness, from God.

4. Fasting is another important aspect of repentance during Holy Week. By abstaining from certain foods or activities, we are reminded of our dependence on God and our need to rely on Him for sustenance.

5. Repentance is not just for individuals - it is also a call to the entire community of believers. During Holy Week, we are reminded of our need to come together in repentance and support one another in our faith journey.

As we prepare to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, let us take the time to reflect on our own need for repentance. May we turn away from our sins and turn toward God, so that we may emerge from this season renewed and refreshed in our faith.

FEAST OF ANNUNCIATION

The Feast of the Annunciation is celebrated on March 25th, exactly nine months before Christmas, and is also known as Lady Day. It is considered one of the most important events in Christian history because it marks the beginning of the incarnation of Christ, in which God became human in the person of Jesus.

On the Feast of the Annunciation, Christians may participate in a variety of activities and traditions. Here are some common practices:

1. Attend church: Many Christians attend special church services on the Feast of the Annunciation. These services may include readings from the Bible, prayers, hymns, and sermons that reflect on the significance of the Annunciation and its role in salvation history.

2. Pray the Angelus: The Angelus is a prayer that commemorates the Annunciation and is traditionally recited three times a day (morning, noon, and evening). On the Feast of the Annunciation, many Christians may choose to recite the Angelus as a way of honoring Mary and reflecting on the mystery of the incarnation.

3. Celebrate with food: In some cultures, the Feast of the Annunciation is associated with special foods or meals. For example, in Italy, it is traditional to eat fried dough balls called zeppole on this day.

4. Create art and decorations: The Feast of the Annunciation has inspired many works of art and decorations throughout history. Christians may create their own art or decorations, such as paintings, sculptures, or banners, to honor the occasion.

5. Engage in acts of service: Some Christians may choose to mark the Feast of the Annunciation by engaging in acts of service or charity. This could include volunteering at a soup kitchen, donating to a charity that supports women and children, or visiting a sick or elderly neighbor.

This feast day commemorates Mary's purification, which was mandated by the Mosaic Law forty days following the birth of a child, as well as the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple.

The Church observes Candlemas on February 2 in honor of the tradition of burning lit candles during the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In keeping with the Eastern custom of celebrating Christmas on that day, it was frequently observed in the early Church on February 14th, 40 days following the Epiphany. The Lord and Simeon's "Meeting" is referred to as the Hypapante among the Orthodox.
