Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to join a group at .schwarz ‘s shop in beautiful Salmon, Idaho, for a saddle construction class. Cary started with a bare tree and, in just five days, built most of a saddle—all while fielding questions, explaining his process, and sharing the philosophies behind good design and craftsmanship.

Experiences like this remind me how blessed I am by the generosity of others who make opportunities like this possible.

I was awarded the Mom’s Scholarship in 2023, organized and sponsored by . That scholarship made it possible for me to take this class with Cary—a true master of our craft—and to learn alongside other craftsmen and craftswomen. Thank you, John, for your generosity and support!

I’m also deeply thankful for:
• My mom, who traveled to Salmon with me and Grady and spent the week hanging out with him while I was in class
• My husband, who held things down at home while I was away
• Tom Berry, who gave me my start in saddle making and helped me build the foundation I continue to grow on

And above all, I’m thankful for the Lord’s provision. Every opportunity I’ve had to pursue this craft has been by His grace—and I’m so grateful for the way He’s guided this whole saddle-making journey.

Craftsmanship is a journey.
Just like motherhood is a journey.
Just like righteousness is a journey.

I can pinpoint a single moment in time that I became a craftsman, a mother, righteous.

The day I built something with my hands, I became a craftsman. I will never not be a craftsman.

The day I had a child of my own, I became a mother. I will never not be a mother.

The day I accepted Christ’s free gift of eternal life, I was declared righteous. I will never not have His righteousness.

But I hope to be a better craftsman, a more gracious mother, and ultimately, a more steadfast Christ follower today than I was yesterday. That’s where the journey is.

“Slowly but surely.”

That’s usually my answer when people ask me how things are going in the shop these days.

I’m in a season of learning to be content with the precious couple hours I get in the shop each day—baby monitor in tow.

But more importantly, I’m trying to stay focused on savoring the precious moments I have with my boy, who is quickly changing and growing. He will never be as little again as he is today. And it’s all to easy to forget that…even though it seems like everyone who has gone ahead of me on the parenthood journey reminds how quickly the time goes. In the thick of it, though, it’s hard to take it to heart.

Being a mama puts a major hitch in my production. My efficiency. My focus. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world. And being a mama and a maker is a balance that I have to re-evaluate pretty much every day. It’s a challenge that I have to rely on the Lord for wisdom in how to navigate.

I’m posting this partially because I feel like I’m making progress. But mostly because by putting these thoughts out into the world, it’ll help hold me more accountable to keep my priorities in order.

So to my loyal customers who await their saddles, thanks for your patience with me. Thanks for hanging around and supporting my business while I whittle away at my list of orders.
