After becoming the country with the most new cases per million inhabitants, Portugal is also first in the number of deaths, on average over the last seven days, according to the Our World in Data portal. - https://ourworldindata.org/
Portugal was already the country with the most newly diagnosed cases of infection with the new coronavirus per million inhabitants and taking into account the average of the last seven days. But, according to the latest data from the Our World in Data portal, updated until this Thursday, it is also the one with the most reported deaths per million inhabitants.
In terms of deaths, the seven-day moving average, Portugal is in the first position, with 18.24 deaths per million inhabitants. This figure has been rising, especially since the end of December. The United Kingdom (18,10), the Czech Republic (14,90) and Slovakia (14,16) follow. The seven-day average has the advantage of allowing conclusions to be drawn less influenced by daily variations and to indicate a more prolonged incidence. The data refers to Thursday, January 21.
As for the new cases, the country has 1,083.59 new diagnoses per million inhabitants, ahead of Andorra (944.80), Israel (875.66) and Spain (747.69). The UK is a few places down, in ninth position, with 597.67. However, for further analysis, it is necessary to take into account other factors, such as the number of tests performed. There, the list is led by Austria and Denmark, with the United Kingdom and Israel in the top 10. Portugal, in 14th place, does just over half of the tests done in Israel (on average over the last seven days) .
Thursday day (without, therefore, the impact of the last week), the news is also not encouraging for the country. In the table of Our World in Data, Portugal leads in new cases (with 1,328.27 diagnoses per million inhabitants), with some distance from Spain (948,72), Andorra (918,92) and Israel (811,85 ).
The platform has not yet updated the data for Friday, but the scenario, according to the Observador's calculations, will not be much different for these countries.
Portugal has seen the epidemiological situation worsen, having surpassed the barrier of 200 deaths in the last four days - 234 this Friday, a new high. It means that, on average, almost five people die every half hour. The country also recorded 13,987 more cases of infection in the last 24 hours, on what is the second worst day ever, which would represent about 1,361 cases per million inhabitants, according to the Observer's calculations based on the population estimated by Eurostat for 2019. This Friday, Spain officially announced 42,885 new cases, that is, about 913 cases per million inhabitants. And Israel, with 7,099 new cases in the last 24 hours, will have about 800 cases per million inhabitants (based on data from the World Bank's total population). (source: Observador)
