Ancient Bog Oak...

Plenty of guitars these days are fitted with sinker woods, some more rare than others. But what about wood buried and preserved in bogs? Maybe you've heard stories of extremely well preserved prehistoric animals being discovered deep in bogs or watched one of the many cold case TV shows where they found.. lets say evidence... from a crime in the distant past. In this case, it's without any nefarious intent or unfortunate miscalculation- it's wood that fell or was felled and remained in the bog for thousands of years. You read that right, much of Ancient Bog Oak has been buried for thousands of years.

As with all guitars and tonewoods, different people hear different things. We think most would agree though that Ancient Bog Oak produces a deep, resonant, mellow tone. Some might even describe it as melancholy. That's not to say it is anything less than amazing, but many people feel it's a very emotive wood and lends itself to deep storytelling over strumming accompaniment. We would agree. We find it to be very articulate, especially when paired with a brighter top like this one in Lutz Spruce, with complex overtones- perfect for fingerstyle.

It's a great story and amazing wood for the always exceptional Lowden S series. This one is available now online and in our showroom.

The spring build orders have been rolling in and this Lowden GL-10 in Amber Burst with Lollar Imperial Humbuckers arrived just last night. Who doesn't love a good burst? We've gone on and on about how high-quality these guitars are, about how they play and sound phenomenal, and about how incredible they look. Why Tonewoods REALLY matter...

It’s a topic beaten into companionship with fields of dead horses and well pounded ground: tonewoods. There are myriad opinions on the subject and three times as many YouTube videos covering the differences. We’re not going to add to that pile of goodness- and some of it is good. We’re going to talk about why tonewoods are really important- the bottom line and what, we think, truly matters.

Is rosewood brighter than mahogany? Sure. Is cedar more mellow than spruce? Yep. Does it matter, tonally, that the wood on your top was harvested during a blood moon that occurs once every 100 years? Here’s the twist: maybe.

We were about to create a talk through on the Lowden fan fret and found this (link below). Who better to talk about it than George himself? There are a few things we can add, however. By giving each string a more ideal scale length, intonation is about as perfect as one can get. In all honesty, for 99% of us, we may never hear the difference over standard compensation, but for those with the most gifted ears- it makes a difference. For the rest of us, the tension on each string is also more ideal- which creates an easier playing experience. The angled frets (more angle at the head and body than center) feels like a more natural position for your fretting hand. It takes a few minutes to get used to, but then feels like it should have always been that way. As hard as it may be to admit, as we get older, those angled frets feel so much better to play and strain your hand less.

More comfort, easier playing, and better sound- seems like a no brainer. They all add up to playing more, for longer, and enjoying it. It's not for everyone and that's okay, but if you're in the market for a new Lowden, it's worth getting your hands (literally) on a fan fret before pulling the trigger. The fan fret option is available on all their steel string models except the F-10 and F-12 (for now). Reach out if you have any questions or are ready to experience a fan fret guitar from Lowden.

I have a soft spot for this one. Cole Clark is known for two things: having the best plugged in acoustic sound out there and using beautiful Australian woods. This FL2 in Bunya and Blackwood isn't the flashiest of them all, but it's the first model of Cole Clark I ever owned and the one that made me fall in love with them. It's simple, but different. It has a classic look, but not resting on old laurels. It's just a great looking, playing, and sounding guitar.

We love working with everyone in their search for guitars. Admittedly, we don’t see many beginners because of the level of instruments (read “price”) we’re selling. We do see all sorts of other players though. We see the old salt with concrete calluses. We see the guys and gals on quest for their own, ultimate, personal tone or just strumming on the weekend. We see the collectors who know more about the origin story of a particular, rare tonewood than we do. We see all of them (you), but there is one type that is extra special: The First Timer.

What we mean is the person who is making the leap from lower priced production guitars to higher quality and maybe even boutique. Why do we think it’s extra special? It’s the joy and realization that comes out of them when they experience the difference; it’s contagious. It’s the way they all strum a guitar and wait… and wait for the resonance to die off. It’s the smile and the follow-on eagerness to play as many guitars as they can while they’re with us- to experience the different brands, sizes, and tonewood combinations. It’s fun for them and fun for us.

There’s a widely spread notion among beginner guitar players- it’s that they have to earn the right to buy a better guitar. It’s silly. We all do it, but it’s silly. If you enjoy it, nothing else matters. It doesn’t matter how you play, where you play, or if anyone else is listening. It only matters that you love doing it. There’s nothing to earn.
