Given the current climate I felt it would be appropriate to adorn my OG vintage “lawsuit” Tokai Hard Puncher with a new set of k***s. While there was no actual lawsuit between the big “F” and some Japanese instrument manufacturers back in the day, there were plenty of “cease-and-desist letters, trademark pressures, and negotiations” flying around which many believe lead to the big “F” setting up shop in Japan.

Please note that I cannot claim the idea for my new k***s is something I came up with. I simply “borrowed” the idea from . It’s such a worthy idea, which I had the ability to follow through with for my own personal pleasure, that I couldn’t help myself. Please don’t send me a C & D letter.

Big thanks to for the new VCA Compressor. It’s much more big fat P-bass friendly than what I was using. It’s more transparent and doesn’t add unwanted treble to my tone.

I’m not a professional musician, but I am a professional musical instrument handler and I feel qualified to offer this pro tip.

There’s a company that advertises heavily on Instagram their line of comfortable air-cell bass and guitar straps. I just want to say that if you’re “strapped for cash” Amazon has the same straps for half the price, branded with a different name and without most of the fancy designs. The only difference I can see is the shape of the ends.

I personally purchased the short version. When standing I wear my bass at the same height as when I’m sitting with the bass (no strap). It’s perfect.

The only real question I have about the Amazon straps is, “What does a dress that Hawaiian ladies wear have to do with guitar straps?”

Have a nice day.

Another local find. I picked up this Mid-late 70’s Yamaha Pulser a little while ago. I’m 99% sure this bass was built by the same factory as the Tokai I picked up a few weeks ago. They’re practically identical, down to all the little details.

The Pulser is going to need a little more work than the Tokai, but it’s nothing major. It needs a few parts swapped and I’ll probably build a new pickup for it. It has some odd Fernandes pickup in it for whatever reason. It also needs some flats (a must).

If you’re looking for something vintage without the vintage price tag, these Japanese lawsuit basses are an excellent choice. The only choice, really IMHO.

Ok, that’s it for me. I’m not buying another bass. I’m not buying another bass. I’m not buying another bass. I’m still working on my Bullet bass project and have enough basses. I’m not buying another bass. I’m not buying another bass.

Carved out a few hours today to get some work done on my Bullet Bass project. I enlarged the pickup cavity for the new pickup so that it’s located in the proper P-bass location.

I also routed the truss rod channel in the beautiful quartersawn roasted maple neck blank. Hope I can find a little time to glue the fingerboard on next week.

NBD. I figured I’d probably never buy another bass, but I don’t think I ever really discounted the idea. After all, I can just build what I want, right?

Today I broke, and picked up this 1981 Tokai Hard Puncher…might be an ‘80. Shoot, I graduated high-school in ‘81. I’m old.

Anyway, I’ve always admired these Japanese lawsuit basses. They are very close to the real thing, some say better. I spotted this one online a couple of days ago and contacted the owner. He happened to have a gig this evening in my part of Texas and he graciously offered to haul it out here for me to check out. The bass is in very good to excellent condition for a 45 year old instrument. It’s mostly original. A few small hardware items have been replaced, but nothing major. These basses are going from about $500-$1300. I was fortunate to get this one towards the low side.

The first thing I’m going to do is remove the IMA sig strings (sorry Ian) and slap some GHS Precision Flats on it that I have laying around. The set up is good, but I like it lowwww. Needs some tweaking there, but not much. It sounds great, but I know a guy who makes some nice pickups. Maybe I’ll give that a try.

All in all I’m very pleased with my purchase.

Got a start on my personal Bullet Bass project. Had to make a few adjustments to the body to ensure a higher level of comfort.

Also gonna have the best neck to ever grace a Bullet Bass. Quartersawn roasted maple, Baby!

…and I found the perfect k***s.

Any idea what this is? No? Ok, I tell ya. It’s a USA 82-‘83 Fender Bullet Bass B34 body. My first decent bass was one of these, which was actually only the second bass I owned. I had it for years, but eventually it became a victim and helped pave the way towards me becoming a bass builder.

Every now and then I get a little nostalgic and I start wishing I still had the old Bullet. I’ll start searching online…looking at prices…you know the drill. As a design goes, it wasn’t very popular. It had its short comings. But that hasn’t stopped me from wanting another one.

I found this body on EBay and pulled the trigger. I have big plans for it. For the most part it will keep its Bullet DNA, but I’m going to build a new neck for it and make a few tweaks. I’ve got a unique idea for the pickup, which will still retain the Bullet vibe.

Kind of wish I could put everything on hold and start working on it, but it will be one of those projects that’s probably going to take a while.
